Far Water Adventure: A Short Story
Far Water Adventure

How often do you see plastic somewhere? Do you bend down and pick it up? Well, maybe you should. It affects wildlife, wildlife habitats, and humans. The ocean is one of those habitats that has been greatly affected by plastic pollution. Now that you have that thought, keep it in mind while we tell you the tale of two sea turtles, Bubbly and her friend Bubbles.

One Friday evening somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, Bubbly the turtle was having a conflict with her mom. Bubbly wanted to go to a place where her mom strongly thought as unsafe.
“But mom all the cool turtles are going to be in the Far Water!” Bubbly argued.
“No buts Bubbly, it's not

“ Right now if you want. “ Said the doctor in a hurry.
“ That would be great! ” Exclaimed Bubbly’s mom.

As they rushed her into surgery , Bubbly said, “ Sorry mom, I knew I shouldn't have disobeyed you.”
“It's ok, we all have to learn, ” said her mom.
After the surgery the nurses came out to let Bubbly's mom know she could see Bubbly. As she went in she saw the look on Bubbly's face and she could tell Bubbly didn't feel well, so Bubbly's mom swam over as fast as she could to be by Bubbly's side.
“ Hi, honey how do you feel?” Her mom crooned softly.
“ I'm fine mom, I'm just a little tired.” She replied weakly.
“ Alright, darling I'll leave you be, but I will be right outside if you need me.” Sniffed her mom.

The next day Bubbles came to visit her.
“ Hey Bubbly, I'm really sorry this happened to you, I hope you get better quickly.”
“ Me too, but the truth is I've been feeling worse.” Replied Bubbly sadly.
“ Oh.” Whispered

In 1947 it was reported that over 40,000 Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles were nesting along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico and today only 200 Kemp Ridley’s remain on those grounds, making these sea turtles one of the most endangered animals in the United States. When I was younger I remember visiting South Padre Island and seeing holes a long the shore line with little eggs inside them, I also remember this man who drove up and down the beach looking for those eggs in a golf cart. I asked my mom “Why is this man taking away these eggs, won’t the momma be sad?” my mom then told me that these were in fact the eggs of the Kemp’s Ridley. I had no idea how that was relevant, I was six…

Unfortunately, plastic does not break down into organic substances, which means that instead of breaking down into natural components that will go back into the earth, plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic until they become nurdles, which are small pellets of plastic. This opposes an issue because as plastic gets smaller, not only does it turn into a large pile of nurdles that can be ingested by seabirds and fish, it also releases the chemicals that are contained within it. According to The National Geographic, Bisphenol A, a major component in plastic, is one of the chemicals that gets released when it breaks down. Bisphenol A is a chemical that is harmful to marine animals in a number of ways. For example, algae gains it’s nutrients through absorption. Algae can absorb bisphenol A, which will affect the entire food web in the end. Small fish tend to eat algae and zooplankton, and when a fish consumes algae that has absorbed bisphenol A, the concentration of the chemical will increase for the fish through a process called bioaccumulation, which causes the chemical to build up in the body of the fish. Not only are these fish at risk of death by toxic chemicals, but when a larger fish eats the smaller fish, they are also consuming the bisphenol A, only an even larger concentration of the chemical. This will continue up the food chain, until the largest marine animals, for example, a dolphin, consumes a fish and gains a high enough concentration of bisphenol A to kill them (nationalgeographic.org). This process is called bioaccumulation, and it has a great impact on the health of marine…

Within a few minutes, the sound of sirens rushes across the school parking lot. The heat from the pavement causes the emergency vehicles to waver surreally, as if they're an illusion speeding toward me. The kid who rolled off the side of the bleachers screams as the paramedics lift him onto a stretcher. His leg is twisted at an odd angle. It's definitely broken.…
