An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

1. In what ways are the condemned man’s perceptions of time and motion distorted as he is waiting to be hanged?

His perception of time and motion are distorted because time seems to slow down for him. His senses are keen and he notices in detail everything that is happening around him, all the preparations for his execution.

2. What is ironic about the fact Farquhar’s agrees with the saying that “all is fair in love and war ?”

The irony in “all is fair in love and war” is that Farquhar lives by this saying. He receives information from a supposed soldier that Farquhar can stop the northern army’s advance by destroying this bridge. This soldier is actually a Federal in a Confederate uniform, setting up Farquhar. Irony is displayed when he both lives and dies by his own saying.

3. What details in part 3 suggest that Farquhar’s journey occurs in his mind?

The details that occur in part 3 suggesting that Farquhar’s journey is all in his mind are when he could see the soldier’s eye color when they are about to shoot him, and he had super natural strength after losing blood to his head from being hung for a moment.

4.Point of view refers to the vantage point from which the story is told. a. Why is the limited 3rd person point of view appropriate for this story? b. How might the story be different if Bierce had used an omniscient 3rd person narrator?

The limited 3rd person point of view is appropriate because it allows you to see the final thoughts of a dying man and hear his story and not anyone else's. The story would be different if the omniscient 3rd person had been used because in anyone else's point of view, Farquhar would have just died and the story would have lost the flashback and sense of time.

These were not speedy trials, so those who were accused of a crime often languished in prison awaiting their trial and ultimately, their fate. This gave them time to reflect on their upcoming punishment or execution. If they were sentenced to death, not only were these individuals going to be executed, but they were also forced to contribute to the spectacle of their death. For example, criminals “were driven from the prison to their deaths sitting with their coffins” (Executions 1). Such a thing would be considered by most as a further insult to injury. In particular the last words of nine different individuals will be examined in the paragraphs below. In order to properly convey these accounts in a historical context we will discuss the individuals in chronological order beginning with the year 1708 and ending with the year 1793, illustrating…

These things all add to a personal phenomenological response that I experienced within the piece. One aspect of this scene I reacted to was a sound of a timer playing through a section of the scene. This timer highlighted the time in which the hanging was to take place. “A gut feeling—or a hunch—is a sensation that appears quickly in consciousness (…) without us being fully aware of the underlying reasons for its occurrence.” (Cholle, 2011) Even though there was no timer present to look at, the sound gave me cause for concern. It gave the scene a certain time frame to work to. As an audience member I felt that the scene was getting tenser and tenser because of this. With the dialogue that was taking place and the main theme of the scene I wanted the characters to speed up what they were doing so that the scene could be over. The anticipation of seeing someone being hung made me want to look away or hide behind hands so I didn’t have to see what was happening. I had a very strong gut feeling that got increasingly worse throughout the scene. It made me feel very on edge. ‘Phenomenology begins when, not content to ‘live’ or ‘relive’, we interrupt live experience in order to signify it’ (Ricoeur, 1983: 116) As the timer ended and the moment arrived where hanging would happen you could hear other audience members mumbling things in disbelief, ‘No!’, ‘Don’t listen to…

The author uses ironic diction to present war as a calamitous machine that of which yields to no one. The first words that arise from the work to the reader is “Do not weep” (Crane 1st stanza), yet it does not comfort the audience. The title emphasizes that the poem is sarcastic and this makes the reader feel doubtful towards the greeting presented to them. In addition,…

In document B “Dulce et Decorum Est”, in this poem it states “Dulce et Decorum Est, pro patria mori” which means it is sweet and right to die for your country. By reading the title of this poem you think the main idea of the text is how war is a good thing, but in reality the poem describes how gruesome and destructive war really is. For example he writes “if you could hear, at every jolt, the blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs.” Here he is describing the scenery when they are gassed and how terrible the conditions were. Another example to support my claim of irony is the last line it states “the old lie: Dulce et Decorum Est, pro patria mori” which shows how that statement is not true and war really is not good or positive in any…

The story is divided in three parts. None of them are written in first person. Most of the story is told in a third person point of view. The storyteller can observe events but cannot enter the mind of ant character and cannot change ant of his or her thoughts. However in some parts of the story, the narration changes to omniscient third person point of view. We know this because the author takes the reader inside Farquhar’s mind to show how his mind interprets reality.…

The point of view is the way the author decides to tell a story and gives us insight on the events happening. Borges decides to tell this story in the first person point of view. This helps us understand the narrator's feelings, ideas and knowledge as the story goes. In the opening paragraph, the narrator states that many people say that their stories are true. He brings…

Throughout the film, the film maker conveys the image of time passing quickly. This is seen in the film where they fast forward the scenes in the new world and urban life. The use of fast paced non-diagetic sound conveys the idea of time passing quickly as the people are fast forwarded as well as the music. This makes the responder understand that time moves so quickly and it will never wait for you. Thus, the film makes it evident that time moves so quickly though people don't realise it and will continue to do their daily tasks.…

It is celebrated as Deepavali (deepa + aavaLi → light + row) in Kannada. It is celebrated on the previous and next day of Amavasye (New Moon Day) as Naraka Chaturdashi (before new-moon day) resembling Satyabhama's victory over Narakasura and as Bali Padyami, the first day of Kartika masa; inviting the greatest emperor of times, Bali Chakravarti to each and everybody's homes. The entire house is cleaned and new clothes are purchased for the entire family which is followed by lighting of oil lamps around the house and bursting firecrackers. The tradition in Kannada families is that all members gather together for the three days celebration. The thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha is celebrated as "neeru tumbo habba" when the house is cleaned, painted afresh and the vessels are washed, bedecked and filled with fresh water for the festival. The next day is Naraka Chaturdashi, considered very auspicious. People wake up before dawn and apply oil on their scalp and body before taking bath, a ritual known as Tailabhyanjana. In parts of North Karnataka, this is followed by the women of the house performing Aarti on the men. The bursting of the crackers ensues. The next day is Lakshmi mahaapooje on Amavaasye (new-moon day) and then on the fourth day decorating the whole house and especially entrance with flowers and floor decoration to invite Bali to their homes; a special fort-entrance kind of thing is made on the entrances of every home which is made out of cow-dung (gOmaya) and Sandalwood (siri-chandana) which both have a high divine reverence in Kannada tradition. The day is of special importance to agricultural families as they celebrate Govardhan Pooja on this day. The houses are adroned with Keraka (replica of the Govardhana giri using cow dung) bejewelled with flowers and maize, ragi stalks. Also fire-camps are kindled on both Naraka Chaturdashi and Bali Padyami days of Deepavali; where in respective community people's gathering is significant and huge…
