Fast Food Advertising Essay
There should be a ban on fast food advertising during children TV programmes. Do you agree?

Advertisements are everywhere. Billboards, Newspapers, Pamphlets and most importantly television. However, there are many people who are concerned about fast food ads, that are running during children programmes. Concerned about children’s wellbeing, people want a ban on fast food advertisements during children programmes. This is because of the addiction, the amount of money being wasted and that children have a lowered pre-frontal lobe capacity. Even though junk food is good to consume every now and then, it should be ban during children TV programmes.
There are many addictions, which include alcohol, drugs and smoking. These are dangers that need to be taken seriously. Even though fast food is not the most important, it is still a hazard. The reason many children become addicted towards fast food is how they describe the product. These words include ‘Succulent Fresh Fillets’. This would make children want more. Fast food addiction leads towards obesity which could involve in organ problems such as Type Two Diabetes. This is why fast food advertisements should be banned during children TV programmes.
There are many things that parents waste their money on for their children. Lollies, toys, entertainment. However, the major issue is buying junk food. Children persuade their parents to buy a product which leaves them in enjoyment while the parents suffering from a loose of money. Instead of buying junk food, something useful could be bought with the money such as clothing and fresh food which is a much better option. An alternative solution would be to buy Subway which is a healthier option and tastes as good as fast food but junk food ads should not be running during children TV programmes.
Children at the age between 0-5 have difficulty understanding that commercials are products that do not actually function as advertised. Furthermore, children at a very young age

    David Barboza’s article “If You Pitch It, They Will Eat” states that “Now it’s Nickelodeon, movies, video games, the Internet and even marketing in schools.” So even as a parent you can’t make your kids stop watching TV or do anything about schools promoting fast food. Even if the parents send their kids with healthy foods they would still prefer to eat fast food like McDonald's or Pizza Hut. Exercising does help you stay healthy but watching TV or playing video games all day doesn’t necessarily make you gain weight because most people when playing video games become really focused on the game and forget to eat and keep on playing without wanting to get up and eat junk food. According to Barboza’s article “According to a survey by the C.D.C., about 20 percent of the nation’s schools now offer brand-name fast food.” So it would be very difficult for a parent to keep their child unexposed to the campaigns that these fast food industries are targeting at kids.     Childhood obesity rates are at an all time high. The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2010. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to 18% over the same period. (cdc.gov, 2013). The time frame these statistics were taken from corresponds well with the boom in the fast food industry. People may argue there is no way to prove it is directly a result of fast food. This may be true, but how can they justify advertising directly at children? It is no secret that fast food is not healthy, and at a young age many children will not know that. All they know is they want to go out to lunch and get the action figure from the newest movie or video game around. In an article titled, “Just How Happy Does the Happy Meal Make McDonald’s?” (2010) the author, Maureen Morrison tells reader’s happy meal sales account for 10% of their revenue, and to put into perspective the monstrosity that is the McDonald’s industry, that 10% would equal more than all of Panera Bread or Ihop in 2009.     As parents teach their children there are many obstacles that get in the way. Commercials for fast food are much more appealing to children than ever. “In 2009 preschoolers saw 56% more ads for Subway, 21% more ads for McDonald's and 9% more ads for Burger King, compared with 2007. Children age 6 to 11 saw even more: 59% more ads for Subway, 26% more for McDonald's and 10% more for Burger King. The report also found that African American kids and teens are exposed to at least 50% more fast food ads than their white counterparts” (Melnick, 2010). As a mother myself, it is hard to avoid these commercials taunting my child. Each time there is a new season or movie there are also new toys within McDonald’s Happy Meals. Advertising candy during the mid-day cartoons has also become a pit-fall. I can recall the commercial for the Charm’s Blow Pop bubble gum commercial where all the kids are jumping around having a great old time with their lollipops. Again, this is media targeting our kids to sell their products. However, parents play a big role in what their children eat as well.…
