Fast Food Nation Essay "A nation 's diet can be more revealing than its art or literature." (p.3) Eric Schlossers book Fast Food Nation is not only an expose of the fast food industry but also shows how the fast food industry has shaped and defined society in America and other nations as the fast food culture spreads globally. He connects the social order of society to the kind of food it eats and the way it eats that food, and relates fast food to other social processes and institutions. His facts are based on years of research and study, and are presented in and easy to follow narrative. Schlosser is so thorough and convincing in his argument, it 's impossible to read this book and not feel disenchanted by the unethical practices of fast food companies, shocked at its effect on our society, and empowered to do something about it. Fast Food Nation takes a look at what we don 't see behind the fast food business, and questions a high cultural cost verses a low dollar value meal. There are ethical concerns in about every business, but none seem to be as intense as the ones found in the meatpacking and fast food industry. "In the days when labor unions were strong workers could complain about excessive line speeds and injury rates without fear of getting fired. Today only one third of IBP 's workers belong to a union." (p.174) Schlosser clearly describes the plight of these employees, pointing out that the majority of them are undocumented immigrants. They are employed "at will" meaning they can be fired at any time, for any reason. They depend on these jobs to support their families. A clear example of this can be seen here in Iowa. Small towns such as Perry are seeing a tremendous amount of undocumented immigrants, lured by the processing plants in the town. The needs of this industry shape a number of social institutions and also have a direct effect on local communities by bringing in people who require more social services than would

    Reading this makes me surprised that we have supported and invested our money into fast-food restaurants that did not even take care of their employees and was not benefitting individuals with all the growth hormones that were put into their animals for such a long time. When the McNugget came out it was a huge success but it wasn’t enough for Fred Turner, he wanted more McNuggets and bigger ones, this then lead to getting a new breed of chickens, according to Eric Schlosser they were had “unusually large breasts” (140). But not only were the animals treated poorly, their own employees who worked hard were being treated as working animals. Right here in Greeley, Colorado, we have and still have a slaughter house where animals go to be cut into chunks of meat so we can cook and eat them. There are plenty of slaughter houses located all around the United States. Back around 1979, a worker named Kenny was working at the Monfort slaughterhouse in Grand Island, Nebraska. In the shipping department, where Kenny was positioned in, there were boxes that weighed over 100 pounds and one day a box fell from above where Kenny caught it with one arm.     The main characters in the novel Fast Food Nation are Richard and Maurice “Mac” McDonald, Ray Kroc, Walt Disney, Carl N. Karcher, and Dave Thomas. The McDonald’s brothers are from New Hampshire. They opened up the first McDonald’s restaurant in 1937 in southern California. They revolutionized the fast food industry in 1948 by ridding their business of carhops, and using disposable plates and cups to serve finger food. Ray Kroc was a high school drop-out from Illinois. He sold milkshake makers until he met the McDonald brothers in 1954. He sold milkshake makers to them, and bought the right to franchise their company. He is known as a pioneer in the fast-food industry for creating characters that rivaled others such as Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney became Ray Kroc’s biggest rival after refusing to put a McDonald’s in Disneyland, which was model marketing to children. Carl is also one of the American fast-food industry’s pioneers. At twenty-years-old, Carl moved to Anaheim, California where he began his first hotdog stand. Carl eventually turned his hotdog stands into drive-in restaurants. After observing the first McDonald’s restaurants success, Carl started expanding and developed the Carl’s Jr’s restaurants. In 1997, the corporation expanded dramatically with the new possession of the Hardee's Restaurant chain. In 2004, CKE Restaurants, Inc. had revenues in excess of 1.4 billion dollars. Dave Thomas dropped out of school at fifteen-years-old. After working as a bus boy and a cook, he eventually founded Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers restaurant in Columbus, Ohio in 1969. Today, there are thousands of Wendy’s restaurants and they remain popular throughout the world. Dave is probably best known as the "guy on the Wendy's TV commercials".
