What is fat? Fat is one of the major nutrients needed in the human body. As soon as somebody mentions fat you automatically think of butter, greasy foods like French fries, and meat. However, oils that are stored at room temperature are fats too. But there is also a good side to fat. We need to keep a healthy amount of it to help our body function properly also if we consume too much of it you could have major health problems.
There are three main forms of Ground Beef needed in this experiment; Extra Lean, Lean, and Regular. Extra Lean contains about 15% of fat and 85% of lean beef. Lean contains about 20% fat and 80% and is usually called Ground Chuck on the label in stores. Regular or Humble Hamburger is the least expensive and also has the highest percentage of added fat. In the experiment there will be three trials with equally shaped patties of all the meat and boil them at the same temperature, time and amount of water. After placing the remaining fat from the pot in the refrigerator, and allow it to cool, then scoop the coagulated fat and weigh it. The independent variables in this experiment are the different types of ground beef; Regular, Lean, and Extra Lean.
