In the the three relationships between the fathers and the sons (Elie and Chlomo, Rabbi Eliahou and his son, Meir and his father) they all have similarities and differences. They have similarities in their religion and situations. They all showed their love and hatred for each other in different ways.
For their similarities they all have at least three things two things in common. They were all stuck in concentration camps, they’re all Jewish, and they all have the will to survive. Elie and his father help each other out with food and they stick together. The relationship between a father and a son is a long and complicated one. Many trials can break the bond amongst predecessor and descendant, however, only a genuine, unsettling evil can bring the two together more closely than ever before. Three techniques are easily identified in the excerpt: the motif of identity loss, resonance to the readers and imagery. From this small section of the memoir important understandings are easily identifiable, such as the way Shlomo and Elie’s relationship intensifies and completely reverses, from a father and child, to equals, and finally Elie taking full care of his father by the end of his journey.…

What is a father? A father is someone who is more than just a person who created you. A father is a person who should be a mentor to you and helps guide you through life. What isn't a father is one who simply puts their children aside to live their own lives and have no part in their children's life and growth. The stories I will be contrasting are "The Last Game," by Jan Weiner and "Reunion," by John Cheever. My first reason of contrast is that in "Last Game," the relationship between characters Jan Weiner and his father is that of mutual admiration in which the son had great respect for his, his pride and braveness of choice which is contrasted in "Reunion," as the son Charlie has feelings of disdain for his a father in that his father's actions were disappointing, disgraceful and selfish. My second reason of contrast is in "Last Game," Jan Weiner's father is dealing with political problems in that he lived in the time of the holocaust and was Jewish, consistently chased by Nazi's who forced him to make a tough decision on suicide as opposed to dying the Nazi way which is contrasted in "Reunion," where the father is dealing with psychological problems in that he is a drunk who's very obnoxious with an abusive mentality. My last reason of contrast of contrast is in "Last Game," there is a strong bond between Jan and his father where their sense of family was strong and they had a deep understanding for each other is contrasted in "Reunion," as there was a lack of a bond due to the father's arrogance and bad personality. I chose these three reasons because I believe they represent and answer the questions what is and isn't a father.…

The relationship is seen to resemble a true father and son relationship when Eliezer becomes scared and nervous for his future. Once their cattle car arrives to the first concentration camp that they visit, Elie thinks to himself, “My hand tightened its grip on my father. All I could think of was not to lose him. Not to remain alone”, (Wiesel 30). Eliezer is relying on his father. He wants his father to protect him throughout his time at the concentration camps. The action that is seen here represents Eliezer’s firm dependance on his father. He wants to stick by his father throughout their time in the concentration camps. Eliezer does not want to get seperated and be on his own because he would feel weak and alone constantly. He wants his dad to protect him, just like any boy would want. The relationship between the two is also seen as very strong when one night the two are trying to fall asleep and Eliezer's father states, “Don’t worry, son. Go to sleep. I’ll watch over you.” and then Eliezer says, “You first, Father. Sleep.” (Wiesel 89). The two want to go to bed but both are feeling a little nervous and unsettled. Eliezer’s father usually is the one who watched over his son while sleeping but tonight, Eliezer wants to look over his father. This action shows the mutual respect and care that the two…

Elie had a father who was all about reality; though he wished to stay with his son, he never tried to hide the truth from him. Joshua had a father that wanted to protect him emotionally as much as possible. Although his father knew how bad the circumstances were, he was able to keep his son alive by giving him a set of rules to follow as if it was a game. With this in mind, it can be seen that these two similar occurrences had two different outcomes based on the way that the fathers influenced how their children perceived the event. “...I believe it important to emphasize how strongly I feel that books, just like people, have a destiny.…

Through the skillful use of literary devices such as informal language, symbolism, metaphors, repetition, as well as clever use of format, Hughes manages to assemble up the image of a mother lovingly, yet firmly, talking to her son about life. This poem is an advice from a mother to son about life that will be challenging and do not think about giving it up.…
