Chapter 1 introduces the two characters that seem to be the main characters, Jasper Jones and Charlie. The chapter begins with Jasper coming to Charlie's window in the middle of the night and asking Charlie to leave his house in order to help him. Although somewhat scared, Charlie also seems to feel honored that Jasper has asked for his help. Charlie describes Jasper as a year older, wiry but with definition and scruffy hair. Jasper explains that he needs Charlie's help but he won't tell him why.
They walk for a while through their town, Corrigan, until Jasper stops to smoke a cigarette in front of the house of the town's infamous Mad Jack Lionel. Chapter 2 Summary
Charlie wakes up in chapter 2 and realizes that he slept late. At first, he doesn't remember what happened the night before but the memories of Laura and Jasper hit him hard after a few moments of being awake. Charlie has the eerie feeling that he is being watched and he expects to see police surrounding his house.
But he is not being watched and no one is there so he takes a bath, where he becomes anxious about whether or not Jasper killed Laura and why Jasper would have sought him out if he did. Charlie decides that he believes Jasper and that, in many ways, Jasper is the only one in town who speaks the whole truth.
After taking a bath, Charlie joins his parents in the kitchen. Initially, he is convinced that they know something because of the way they are looking at him. But...
