Female Empowerment In The Odd Women
In The Odd Women, I enjoyed the concept of female empowerment especially with Miss Nunn and Miss Barefoot who believe that women are successful even if they are not in a marriage. I find it interesting that the men are wanting a relationship as the men are unable to find stability without marriage. I especially see this concept of a man’s need for a relationship in Widdowson. When Widdowson meets Monica, he is intrigued and wants to get to know her, which he tries setting up multiple ‘dates’, which I believe Monica does not entirely agree to getting to know him better, nor is she truly interested. However, Monica does end up marrying Widdowson, which I believe she does not truly love him, although she admits she does have feelings. Yet, I assume
that Monica only marries Widdowson for Widdowson’s needs, instead of her owns. Upon their marriage, Monica brings up her own ideas about wanting to do things herself, such as meet with her sisters, except, Widdowson explains she should just send a letter to her sister. Yet, the Widdowson’s response illustrates the power, he wants to have over Monica, as he does not want Monica to leave him to meet with her sisters. However, during this interaction, Widdowson is said to dislike the word ‘change’. Windows initially fears the idea of change. Furthermore, Widdowson has trouble accepting Monica’s independence, especially when Monica explains that she used to live alone. Windowson cannot overcome that women do not need a man’s support. Nonetheless, I find Widdowson’s name interesting because of the association of the word ‘Widow’ implied in the name. The association with a widow examples a marriage where one of the spouses passes away and one is still living. Thus, the word ‘widow’ truly describes Widdowson because it reflects on his past.
