The term Female Genital Mutilation was adopted in the 1970’s and it replaced the term “female circumcision.” However, FGM was practiced way before. It has been in practice for about 1400 years. There are four different types. The World Health Organization (WHO) explains the different kinds. The first type is the “removal or splitting of the clitoral hood”. “The clitoral hood is homologous to the foreskin of the penis, which is removed during the circumcision”. The second one is excision of the clitoris with partial or total excision of the labia minora. The third is infibulations with excision. "Excision of part or all of the external genitalia and stitching/narrowing of the vaginal opening (infibulations)”.
