This qualitative study will analyze the relationship between negative stereotypes and perceived performance by black college students. The sample chosen will be five black students (N=5), male and female, age 18 to 25, from Norfolk State university. Data will be collected through the process of face-to-face interviews lasting five to six minutes. The questions asked will identify if the respondents are aware of negative stereotypes among black individuals. And if so, the respondent will be asked about
their academic performance and if these stereotypes played a role in their academic career. The respondents will be required be sign a consent form in order to participate in the research project. Any responses given by the respondent will be kept confidential and anonymous, only to be reviewed by the researcher. The dependent variable has been identified as the black college student’s academic performance. While the independent variable has been identified as the negative stereotypes displayed through the media.
