The mask is one of the most important parts to fencing gear, as it offers a barrier of protection against the face and protects the head. When looking to buy a fencing mask, it can be very confusing to figure out which kind is best for you, and with all the different kinds of masks available for different purposes and skill levels, it can seem like there’s a fine line between convenience and complexity. There isn’t really a lot of information on the different kinds of masks and what they are used for, and with different types of fencing jargon thrown in the mix, it can be quite overwhelming.But with the right knowledge, it can become a piece of cake to find the perfect mask.

An epee mask is simple in form because it doesn’t contain any conductive material. A cheap epee mask could run as low as $45. The best fit on the market is the the Leon Paul X-Change mask, which runs for under 300.
Foil
Foil masks, unlike epee, requires it to have conductive material over the torso and neck. A cheap foil mask can cost as low as $50.
Saber
A saber mask differs from both a foil mask and a epee mask because it’s entire mask is conductive. A cheap saber mask can run for as low as $80.
Notable Rules
Since August 1, 2012, a conductive bib is required for all USA Fencing-sanctioned events in foil at all levels.
You cannot use a saber mask or a foil mask with electric bib in epee. Have mask checked regularly via punch test.
Masks with a transparent visor are prohibited by the rules in foil and epee. Saber use optional.
For those fencers who intend to use saber in competition: a special mask completely covered in conductive material is required.
Special masks are sold with removable liners that can be pulled out and washed separately. This can be ideal for those with sensitive skin.
