Introduction The novel I read for the project was “Fever 1793” by Laurie Halse Anderson. Fever 1793 is a story about a little girl named Matilda Cook who lives during the time that Yellow Fever broke out. Some of the novel is fiction, and some of the book is historical.
Key Idea 1 The first Key Idea of the novel is the fever itself. The fever changes how everyone lives. It makes some leave the town and some stay. It makes people think some are crazy and it makes people go crazy.
It makes people start thinking that it was the river that brought the sickness and others think that foreigners brought it with them, that is if they believe that there is a fever. Those who did not believe there was a fever and did not take the precautions to prevent the fever from getting to them learned for themselves that the fever was real. Mattie's Grandfather is a good example of this. He did not believe that the fever was real at first. He just thought it was a coincidence that people were getting sick. Mattie trusted in her grandfather and her mother. She trusted that her grandfather would tell her the truth about the fever, because he had taught her many military things and she thought she could handle the knowledge of the fever. Then, when the fever broke out and made her mom sick, Mattie had to trust her grandfather again. She had to trust that he would take her to a safe place and keep her safe. She trusted that he would keep her well and alive. Mattie had to trust in her mother also, she trusted that her mother would do the pick the best choices for her. This is shown when Mattie does not put up a big fight when she is told to leave with her grandfather. If Mattie would not have trusted her mother and grandfather then she would not have
