I have recently finished the book "Fever 1789" by Laurie Halse Anderson. It was filled with a roller coaster of emotion leaving the reader on the edge before every chapter. The description in the book fills my mind of how it was back in the 1700's. This book demostrats a good understanding of the environment and tone in the book. At the end of the book it shows real life sections of how Anderson used history into a fictional story. The other book i'm reading is "Night" by Ellie Wiesel. It shows a similiar dark approach to the book's setting. The book is based off Ellie's life in a concentration camp during the Nazi regime. Ellie was only just a young boy and he had to endure painful suffering. Watching the people die around you and seeing your…

Fever, 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson displays a strong yet subtle theme of Disease. The novel itself revolves around the Yellow Fever epidemic of the late 18th century in revolutionary America, which affected many, many people. So many people lost their lives, but this subject is just so poorly covered. Thankfully L.H.A had the idea to take this subject and let readers dig deeper into one’s life during the conflict. But how is the theme supported and thrown at the reader at a steady pace throughout the book? With evidence and ideas from the novel, this theme can be heavily supported. This theme will be supported by yours truly today with all evidence, though possibly not correct, will be tested.…
All people in the world during life are faced with problems that they have to face and persevere. When the novel first started Matilda is introduced to an easy life. But into the book things get bad for Mattie and her family because Matilda’s mother and grandfather get the yellow fever and her grandpa dies. Towards the ending of the book matilda was running the coffeehouse and doing everything that her mother was doing. When faced with adversities, the natural way of a human to respond to them are to fix them or just try to move on, but in some novels characters have to go through the worst of them, so let's talk about how they felt and what they went through. Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson.…
Did you know that the yellow fever is estimated to infect 200,000 people a year causing 30,000 deaths. 90% of these deaths are in Africa. In Fever 1793, there is an outbreak of the yellow fever in the newly born country now called the United States of America. The main character, Matilda is very childish and lazy when it comes to work around the house. When her mother is diagnosed with the fever, her whole life and future is filled with fear. After she personally experiences the fever and survives, she starts to accept what is going on around her. She is still very afraid at this time. After all these hardships, she comes out of this experience as a mature young adult. These four stages have major effect on Mattie’s personality, confidence,…
In the “Masque Of Red Death” by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe uses imagery and symbolism to create an allegory that communicates to the reader the idea that nobody is able to escape death. In the story, Prince Prospero and his royal friends seclude themselves away from a plague called red death that is killing every poor soul it comes in contact with. As the royals entertain themselves with a masquerade, red death himself arrives at the party, finishing up of what's left of human civilization. Now the first thing that is found that creates imagery and symbolism is a line in the story that says,”While the chimes of the clock yet ran, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale”.(Poe pg.5) This shows a symbol of a black grandfather…
This poem introduces a slave owner who has been studying smallpox and how Boston had a bad case of it going around. He asks his slave had he ever had smallpox, and Onesimus, the slave, answers yes and no, with humor. Onesimus says: “Consider how a man can take inside all manner of disease and still survive.” This came of as describing slavery as a disease to me. So, basically Onesimus is saying how he may have not contracted the smallpox disease, but the conditions and contaminants of slavery were hindering enough on their own. The author’s use of diction really stands out in the last lines of the poem and are italicized reading: “My mother bore me in the southern wild. She scratched my skin and I got sick, but lived to come here, free of smallpox,…
Bram Stoker 's Dracula, presents an interesting perspective on death and illness in the Victorian period. This can be viewed as a creativity on Stoker 's part, or as a form of religious or social commentary on his changing era. There are several flaws presented throughout the novel as the plot unfolds, which are: characters in the novel dismiss the old traditional belief of the supernatural, the constant power struggle between the sexes and the Victorian views on sexuality. The supernatural or metaphysical aspects presented in Dracula reflect the tragic flaws of the patriarchal society during the Victorian Era.…
The universal theme, no one can escape death, is displayed in “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe. In this story, Prince Prospero threw a masquerade to distract him from the pestilence that was The Red Death. His guests were worried about the plague getting to them and killing them all, and they tried forgetting about it. Eventually, The Red Death came and everyone, including the prince, was killed. This theme is not just found in this story, it appears in other places. The universal theme, no one can escape death, is found in “The Masque of the Red Death” as well as in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and in the “Book of Psalms”.…
You have to know that even though you are wealthy it does not mean you can escape death. In the short story "The Masque of the Red Death", written by Edgar Allan Poe, is about a masquerade party that is hosted by a man named Prince Prospero. During the plague, Prince Prospero invites his light-hearted friends to come to his castle and have fun while people are dying outside. In the middle of the party, it was interrupted by a guest dressed in garments related with the plague of the "Red Death". All of the guests began to die as they touch or recognized the Red Death. The allegory is sending a message of how "Death is inevitable and you can't escape it even if you are wealthy.” In Edgar Allan Poe's story, he uses symbolism throughout the story. He used Prince Prospero, the seven rooms, and the clock.…
The Fever of 1793 was 224 years ago. There was no technology, no cars, no phones. The setting was in Philadelphia. It was hotter than usual summers therefore, the water level of the streams and wells went down. Stagnant water attracts mosquitoes, which carry a disease. A fever came around called “the yellow fever” it killed a lot of people, and many suffered. Doctors could not do much to stop or heal people with the fever due to lack of medical resources. Many people tried to leave Philadelphia to go to the country, but were not able to because they did not want the victims of the fever in their town.…
This story is full of literary elements. These literary elements are beneficial because the characters in the story do not show much emotions and through the elements we see the characters emotions. McCarthy’s literary element that has the greatest magnitude in Blood Meridian is symbolism. Through symbolism we see connections between the characters and the philosophical world (IC 3). This symbolism is a key part of Blood Meridian. McCarthy uses the Judge and devil symbol to put the Judge’s power in our perspective. Without this symbol and the symbolism used throughout the book one would be lost. McCarthy uses symbolism to help us as readers relate to the book but also to show character emotions and characteristics.…
The novel The Count of Monte Cristo written by Alexandre Dumas has many aspects of symbolism that enhance the story of Edmond Dantès’ quest for revenge. Not only are the objects and people symbolic but perhaps the most significant and symbolic aspects of the book are the occurrences throughout the story. First, the sea has significant underlying meaning throughout the plot beginning when Edmond Dantès escapes prison and is cast into the sea. Second, the way in which the Count of Monte Cristo achieves revenge is reflected by the way, which each villain made the Count suffer. Finally and possibly the most sobering of all examples of symbolism in this book is that of Dantès’ giving Mercédès the last piece of his past self; the money he had saved…
The structure of In Time of Plague puts us in the mind of the speaker and gives us his view of the conversation that is taking place in the gay bar. The first stanza of the poem it introduces the reader that the speaker is thinking about the plague that is happening within the gay community of AIDS, and despite this he cannot control his sexual attraction. This is shown when two handsome men named Brad and John ask him to shoot up, the speaker is almost hypnotized by these two men’s appearances that he doesn’t care that what’s on Brad and John’s mind is death. In the second stanza it addresses the situation of the speaker, Brad and John are gay and that they are also in a gay bar with people coming in and out of it. The speaker goes on to explain…
