1. What religious and social conditions existed before the Reformation?
Before the Reformation people still believed in the aspects of Renaissance. That was simply following human nature and its loyalty to traditional religion. Eventually what happened was a spread of a powerful religious movement which began in Germany and spread throughout northern Europe. The social conditions before the reformation were stable until protestants started a revolution against the church.
2. Why did Luther believe in justification by faith alone?
Luther believed in justification by faith alone where people were to strive for perfection to satisfy god. He disliked the disproportion between his own sense of sinfulness and the perfect righteousness god required for salvation. As a result of this he believed in the justification by faith alone.
3. Why did Luther attack the sale of indulgences?
As the demand for indulgences became more and more popular, priests found a way to earn a profit off it by selling them for small cash payments. In fact the selling of indulgences began to become some sort of a market. Luther strongly disliked the idea of selling indulgences and therefore created the ninety- five theses against indulgences on the door of the Castle Church .
4. How did authorities respond to Luther’s attacks?
Luther eventually became a central and prominent figure during this time of cultural movement. The authorities slowly became wary about Luther’s situation and as a result Luther was summoned by the general to defend his argument.
