Figurative Language In Those Winter Sundays
Poetry englobes everything all Masterpieces together can convey, from visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile and gustative senses to emotions puzzled in the poet’s choice of words, in a way to tell a story and touch the audience. They use many techniques in their poems through which they deliver their message, but the musicality they adopt when writing plays a major role on the pathos aspect that captivates the readers and the listeners. While “Those Winter Sundays”, “Still I Rise” and “Daddy” all share the same free verse form to explore the theme of Dominance vs. Submission, they employ an array of literary devices and figurative language supported by different sound devices to highlight important elements of emotions.

“Those Winter Sundays” uses consonance in mainly the first half of the poem. The use of the “k” sound in “blueblack cold” (2), “cracked … ached” (3), “weekday” (4) and “banked…thanked” (5) brings roughness and friction to the words through which the author highlights the toughness of life. In contrast, “Daddy” mainly overuses assonance throughout all the poem, in words such as “do” (1), “shoe” (2), “Achoo” (5), “you” (6), “blue” (12), in addition to other similarly-sounding words. These soft sounds emphasize the weakness of author Sylvia Plath in front of her father’s strength to show her desire to escape the patriarchy and the dominance of her father. Furthermore, word repetitions stand out in Plath’s poem. The repetition of words such as “Jew” (32-35, 40), “wars” (18) and “Ich” (27) creates an insight to the Holocaust where Nazis represented by the word “Ich”, originating from German, designate the Father, “Jews” symbolize the author whereas the “wars” show their turbulent relationship. Likewise, “Still I Rise” uses the sound element in the repetitions of certain words that create a certain meaningful musicality. The phrases “I rise” (30, 32, 36, 38, 41-43) and “I’ll rise” (4, 12, 24) craft the insistence of the oppressed with their will to change the reality of things. Author Maya Angelou narrates the story of the oppression she suffered from in her life, in addition to her success in overcoming the persecution through these

I can tell you the author's style in the book, In November. The author's style is more childish. She uses a lot of figurative language such as personification, metaphors, and similies. An example from the text is that she wrote that the earth was making its bed. The author also states that to birds, berries were treasure. These are figurative language because the earth making its bed is a personification, this is true because the earth is not human so it is not Possible for it to make its bed. Also berries are compared to treasure which makes that a…

In the sonnet “Those Winter Sundays”, the theme is the warmth of the coal fire becomes the warmth of the love that radiates throughout the house. An adult speaker presents memories of how his father expressed love for him through his actions. In particular, the speaker remembers that his father rose very early on Sunday mornings to stoke the furnace fire. Only when the house was warm did he awaken his son to dress. Line 12 notes that the father also polished his son's "good shoes," indicating that he will be taking or sending his son to church. Thus, the father takes seriously the moral upbringing of his boy. The phrase "chronic angers" in line 9 is open to interpretation. It could mean that sternly scolds his son from time to time or that arguments are commonplace in the household. It seems clear, though, that he is a good father. He accomplishes his Sunday tasks with aching, skin-cracked hands subjected during the week to the fierce cold he endures on the job. The adult speaker regrets now that he never took the time to thank his father for his concern and love.…

Much like poetry, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” Music and poetry are two platforms in which artists from the beginning of time have chosen to circulate their ideas, feelings, and opinions. Although different in popularity, these mediums are alike in various ways. Nonetheless, not every song you hear on the radio can be properly analyzed using procedures that you would follow to evaluate poetry. A song has to contain certain literary elements essential to poetry, such as the song “From Eden” by Hozier, in order for it to be analyzed. Hozier is recognized for his sentimental lyrics and use of poetic elements to add musicality and rhythm to his music. Through symbolism, repetition, and…

I am by no means a poetry fanatic. I disliked learning about their structure in middle school into high school. I loathed having to put together haikus and soliloquies for my English class freshman year. That being said I entered the basement of St. Ignacious with a rather jaded attitude and a goal for my new high score for the next level of Angry Birds. I slumped down in my chair next to my friends who also, I’m sure, shared a similar approach to this Thursday night where the plans for later that evening were of more importance. However, what Peter Rogen and Amir Vahab performed for the next hour kept my phone in my pocket and my attention fixed on Peter’s soft spoken tone and Amir’s calming melodies. While I noticed some of my classmates exiting early and dozing off, I saw others fixated just as I was.…

Hayden begins the poem with the words “Sundays too”[stanza 1 line 1] to set the mood of the poem. Sunday is considered a day of rest, yet the boy’s father braves the harsh and unforgiving winter to cut firewood. Hayden continues to state that his father rose before dawn to warm the house so that his family would wake to a warm home, “my father got up early and put his clothes”[stanza 1 line 2-3]. Hayden adds an element of pain through the sounds of select words. He utilizes the “c” sound, which adds the sound of physical pain. This is especially evident in the line, “cracked hands that ached”[stanza 1 line 3]. Lines two and three continue to describe the conditions in which the father had to work in. The “blueblack cold”[stanza 1 line 2] serves as imagery of…

In Literature, poems can often be very difficult for one to comprehend and interpret the author’s perspective. Many people grew only being exposed to the basic “Roses are red, violets are blue” form of poetic expression, so anything that fails to employ simple rhythmic phrases can be somewhat aloof to some people. Poetry is one of the most artistic forms of literature because it influences the author to express big thoughts and imaginations in somewhat of an abbreviated writing style, in contrast to essays, short stories, etc. A Subaltern’s Love Song by John Betjeman is an example of poetry that takes the reader on a journey of music and a love story.…

Throughout the poem, Plath’s German diction and sporadic syntax creates a morbid tone. Many of the words Plath uses in her poem are German, creating a relation to her father, and also an allusion to WWII. Plath uses words such as “Ach, du” (Line 15), “Ich” (Line 27), and “Luftwaffe” (Line 42) to build a bridge back to her father. Other words, such as “Aryan” (Line 44), “swastika” (Line 46), and “Fascist” (Line 48) are used to allude to World War II. In stanzas 5-9, Plath expresses her fear of her father using many German words and WWII colloquial to metaphorically compare her father to a Nazi soldier. In stanzas 5 and 6, Plath says “So I never could tell where you/ Put your foot, your root, / I never could talk to you/ The tongue stuck in my jaw. / It stuck in a barb wire snare. / Ich, ich, ich, ich, / I could hardly speak. / I thought every German was you. / And the language obscene” revealing that she was afraid to speak to her father, due to his abusive ways. In the ninth stanza, Plath divulges that her father was very superficial. Lines 41 to 45 she expresses her negative emotions toward her father, by comparing her to Hitler. This is expressed when she says, “I have always been scared of you,/ With you Luftwaffe, your gobbedygoo./ And your neat moustache/ And your Aryan eye, bright blue./ Panzer-man, panzer-man, O You—“. Later 5on in the poem, Plath talks about the man she married to compensate for the loss of father when she says, “I made a model of you, / A man in black with a Meinkampf look”…
