Lars has a unique relationship with the people he interacts on a daily basis. In the film, he is the “closest” to his brother, Gus, and sister-in-law, Karin because he frequently encounters them due to the fact he lives in their garage. As the film begins, Lars and Gus’ relationship is distant from one another. Usually, relationships between siblings are fairly close, however, the relationship between the two is evidently awkward and it is present that they have difficulties in communicating. The teaching of human dignity is evident because although Lars has a distant relationship with the community treats him just as important as the others. Lars is socially awkward and consumed with isolated behaviors, however, the community does not treat him as an outsider or disregard his presence. Lars has difficulty maintaining a close relationship with his family and co-workers because he rarely takes the time out of his day to communicate to them, however they continue to invite him to gatherings and dinners. Human dignity towards Lars also is present, although the community is in shock that his girlfriend is a sex doll. The community takes the time to process Lars' circumstance because they find it odd. However, overtime they understand they should treat him like anyone else in society rather than looking down on his lifestyle because they know that everyone’s life is equally important. Furthermore, support and exception of Lars and his sex doll prove that regardless of his beliefs, they will always treat him with human dignity. Another example of human dignity is the way Lars and the community treats Bianca. Despite the fact that Bianca is not a human being Lars treats her with the same respect, and values proving her life is sacred and just like everyone else.
