Roman Polanski’s film “Rosemary’s Baby” gives rise to the classic horror film, with the theme of ambition by the protagonist Guy, who in change of success makes a pact with the Devil. The film accounts for many themes that characterize it as the classical horror movie of all times. The pact with the Devil and the born child, offspring of the Devil itself are themes been used in many movies subsequently. The movie starts with the promising life of the couple as they begin their life together. Guy marries young Rosemary and move to a house to begin their life as a couple .Then, as any couple's dream they both decide to have a child that will be the product of their love. However, Guys intentions with the baby are not
as lovely as the character makes Rosemary believe. Guy’s unsuccessful acting career creates the problem that leads him to make a deal with the Devil. The pact brought joy to Guy’s life, success and many opportunities at the expense of Rosemary’s pain, the death of friends and the trade of his son. The author emphasizes on the results of such pact.
Furthermore, the betrayal of Guy highlights the agony of his wife. Rosemary goes through the worse pregnancy imaginable to any woman, feeling that the child might be wicked. The movie exposes Rosemary to the presence of cults, witches and the unfortunate horror of baring the monstrous child. The child of Satan is a common theme in movies such as “The Omen” by Richard Donner in 1976 and another version of this film in 2006 by John Moore. Rosemary also experiences living with the enemy, being monitored and influenced to do what Guy and the “neighbors” want. Not to mention, when Rosemary tries to seek help society discourages her and the doctors assume she is insane. Rosemary’s “unreasonable” ideas and the plot to retain her under control to obtain her baby is another theme that brings horror to the life of the protagonist. Often this theme is portrayed in asylums, psychiatric or mental institutions with characters that are forced to live like prisoners under medical control.
