Film Analysis: The Outsiders

The plot in the movie and the novel had many differences. The exposition is one of the differences that made the movie confusing. Instead of Ponyboy leaving the movie house and getting jumped by the Socs, he starts to write The Outsiders. It was a huge mistake for Francis Coppola to leave this out because the exposition in the book involved a significant event, where the Socs showed the violent relationship they have between the Greasers. Another difference is When Cherry explains to Ponyboy that ‘Socs are cool to the point of not feeling anything’, without this scene in the movie, it is harder to understand how Cherry views the conflict between Socs and Greasers. Although there were differences, there were also similarities. One of them is the scene where Dally slapped Ponyboy; this scene was kept the same because this is how the three deaths started. If Dally didn’t slap Ponyboy, he wouldn’t have run away with Johnny and stabbed a Soc. He wouldn’t have gone to the abandoned church to hide, the church wouldn’t have been caught on fire, Johnny wouldn’t have been trapped inside, Johnny wouldn’t have died because of his condition, Dally wouldn’t have gone crazy and rob a grocery store and Dally wouldn’t have been shot by the police. In the novel, Ponyboy described the countryside well enough to feel like you are there. However, in the movie the countryside looked plain and boring. The sky was the only feature that made it look alive. The countryside could’ve been more of how Ponyboy described it in the book because it is the only place where Ponyboy and Johnny felt safe and happy. In contrast, of the book, the movie had North side and South side instead of East side and West side. This confuses the reader and leaves them questioning why it was
