During the film of The Right to Be Rescued, many disable people face was that their lives are thought to be less valuable. Many disabled people were left behind during the Hurricane Katrina and were left to drown to death. Their life is not as valuable as to other people that doesn’t have a disability. Those who don’t have a disability would rather save themselves and their family first before helping other people. Their priority isn’t those disabled people and they probably think why even bother to help when they can’t even support themselves.
According to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), employers can pay disabled people below minimum wage accordingly to their productivity as compared with other workers. Companies would also hire those who are not disabled compared to a disabled person because they fear what will happen. They would fear of unknown costs such as accommodations, damaged goods, the affect a person with a disability would have on the workplace, and what if the job doesn’t work out for them. This was an example of the devaluation of disabled people because this show how they are not capable of what will happen if they were to hire a disabled person. Many disabled people needs were often overlooked or completely disregarded because their lives were not as valuable as other people’s live. People with developmental disabilities are frequently denied the right to vote. One of their freedom was removed. It is seen that disabled people faced that their lives were not as valuable as other people because they will get paid less and one of their rights were removed from them.
