In the beginning of this heartfelt movie, we see a woman swimming her way to freedom. I had the same reaction to this incredible film both times watching it: my eyes were open to the reality of what it takes for some to have a better opportunity. The beginning scenes resonated with me as at age 5, I lived with my grandmother while my mama was setting everything up for us in Kansas. Upon watching this film, I could not help but think of the struggle my mother and I had during my early years. Although there are many differences between Carlito’s situation and my own, I too looked forward to the phone calls and gifts I would receive from my mother. This scene made me upset to see Carlitos make it so close to his mother yet completely miss her. I knew that the outcome was destined to be a gratifying one after witnessing one young boy's strength and determination. My least favorite part of the movie was when it concluded. The writer succeeded at leaving me curious about the outcome of the strong mother as well as her resilient son. It is nice to see a positive outcome from this story, but I now know that in reality, not everyone can be so lucky. I now watch other movies in Spanish because I was introduced to this
