The terms “Film Art” and “Film History” give off a form of impression and historical knowledge passed down many generations, but to most people it is just a form of relaxation or escape, not really paying attention to the sentimental value or knowledge it can provide. Looking closely at how the art of film production has changed across time by examining the development of the medium that today's film production is already part of history. For example, in Germany, expression filmmakers created films to convince men to inlist in the army. War in general was unpopular in Germany and rebellious tendencies increased after the success of the Russian Revolutionin 1917. In 1918, at the end of the First World War, the need for propaganda films disappeared, but German films were also banned overseas. This situation created a need for internal discussion amongst German filmmakers. Two filmmakers in particular, Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz, approached a small independent company named Decla to produce a film they had written called,The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. It was important for them that the film be produced (the expressionist style is already a signature style, you double noted) based on the Expressionist style that was popular in the art world (be a little more specific) at the time. Tradition plays apart in film history as filmakers learn what counts as a good performance,in effect, it favors certain creative choices over others. One example of a filmmaking tradition is from American Studio Cinema, when the Hollywood tradition influenced filmmaking aroundthe world. Traditions nudge filmmakers towards certain choices and away from others. Filmmakers also tend to rebel against tradition and start a short lived trend known as a movement. (Bordwell&Thompson,2012:p.
