1. Frederick Douglass is very detailed in his description of Mr. Plummer. Why?
Answer:
Douglass was very detailed in his description of Mr. Plummer because he was so cruel, and his description encapsulated his encounters with the cruelty of Mr. Plummer, and his masters in general. Douglass detailed how evil Mr. Plummer could be with how he punished female slaves in order to give an example of the general evil of slavery.

2. Why might a slave be willing to die rather than submit to a cruel master or overseer?
Answer:
A slave would be willing to die rather than submit because the master or overseer would torture their slaves so horrifically that they would be close to death. The master would punish their slaves for no reason at all, with no remorse. Death would be less painful to a slave.

3. How does Douglass cope with the cold with only a shirt to wear? Answer this question and then record at least 3 other details in Chapters 3–5 about the living conditions during his childhood. Please include textual evidence in your answer as well as what page number you found it on.
Answer:
Douglass coped with the cold by stealing an old corn bag used at the mill. He would crawl into the bag with his feet sticking out. There was no bed, as he had to sleep on the cold, damp, clay floor. In the text, Douglass says, “I used to steal a bag which was used for carrying corn to the mill. I would crawl into this bag, and there sleep on the cold, damp, clay floor, with my head in and feet out. My feet have been so cracked with the frost, that the pen with which I am writing might be laid in the gashes.” (Douglass 23). He also slept in a close, crowded shed. He had only boiled corn meal to eat from a tray on the ground.
