EVALUATION OF INITIAL GOALS
One of my major goals by the end of the semester was to feel more competent in the cultural diversity and the application areas. My practicum site serves a diverse clientele including low SES, LGBTQ, African Americans, Caucasians, Latinos, older adults, and people with disability. I am working on demonstrating knowledge, awareness and understanding towards diverse clients. This semester, I was more comfortable addressing racism and discrimination that my clients have experienced. I was able see the way in which sociocultural context impact on clients’ wellbeing. I also worked on the scientific understanding of contextual factors

At the beginning of my sessions, I told my clients when I will leave the site and occasionally, we touch on termination in sessions. Based on that fact, I plan my sessions accordingly and help my clients get their needs met and facilitate their transition. I prepare myself for termination and get support around that.
One of the areas I still need to work on is competence on pharmacology and health psychology. I expose myself to didactic training at my site about psychotropic medications. This semester I had clients with cognitive disability and clients who need pain management approaches required me work on interventions on pain management and health psychology.
This semester since I have been more familiar with the resources in the city, I connected my clients to outside support groups such as grief counseling and sexual abuse support groups. Regarding interdisciplinary systems, I am interested in respectfully collaborating with other professionals. During this second semester, I was involved with other professionals such as nurse practitioners and psychiatrists with regards to the cases, which was enriching my experience with my clinical perspective. For the summer, I plan on working at Rogers Memorial Hospital Trauma clinic. My next plan is to continue with adults experiencing war/refugee

In today’s society, one has to be culturally competent and sensitive to diversity issues in order to understand others. The reasons for this are to broaden one's worldview of others and be more open-minded, increase one's awareness of others' identities and cultures, as well as increasing one's knowledge of different ethnicities, races, and cultures. This allows someone to work with people from different backgrounds and be more accepting of the various cultures and people we will have to work with.…

Core Competency involves incorporating diversity into practice. This skill is associated with several practice behaviors that I will be linking to specific artifacts. The first practice behavior is transforming one’s behavior in response to recognition of one’s biases based in difference and culture. This practice behavior relates to an Alcohol Anonymous meeting that I attended, and I had to write a reflection for my substance abuse class. The second practice behavior is modifying and adapting mainstream knowledge and interventions to meet \ needs of diverse populations and that challenge oppression. This consisted of a population at risk paper I wrote for class regarding human trafficking. The third practice behavior is applying strengths…

I also engage myself in my education and job opportunity with social competency however; I do feel that I need to progress in my cultural competency to better help my clients when I do become a social worker. That’s why I am in this class! I see myself with the role of being a student and teacher in cultural competency. The role of a student in social competency would illustrate being aware of what is around them within the classroom regarding diversity while accepting it. After completing my first semester of college, I have found a special drive within myself to do more and more. I was fortunate enough to seek help from individuals who also see the diversity barrier as a problem and ask them to educate me on why this is a problem and how can we as individuals do our part. Being from a city like Los Angeles, where we can find an exhausting amount of different cultures, we would expect to have many different faces in multiple professions. Instead we see the minimal. I attended a conference at the UC Irvine School of Medicine that really opened my eyes to the problems of diversity in medicine. This is a conference that I will forever be grateful that I attended. Here I listened to speakers of similar background…

The word literature has a great meaning in everyday life and comes in so many different ways. The body of written works of a language, period, or culture with the imaginative or creative writing especially of recognized artistic value (Houghton Mifflin Company, 2011) is the dictionary meaning. Lyrics, poems, short stories are all kinds of literature and many authors will write something they are passionate about or have an interest in. Many instances there are times a writer will write about a particular subject or within a certain genre and they write in a manner that sometimes had a hidden meaning. To know the hidden meaning the author will use symbolism, and as a writer and reader it helps to understand the elements that go into writing a poem, short story, and lyric. The writer goes through a process of creating a theme which helps to set the tone and will help them to develop the plot. Many times an author when writing a poem or lyric will not always have a character, but will have some sort of setting that resulted from the theme. All of the elements of literature need to have been put into place, and in many times the writer will also put a hidden meaning into the story, poem, or lyrics which the reader needs to read between the lines. Symbolism can be revealed in the theme, the tone or the plot of the story, poem and lyric. To find the underlying meaning or the symbolism the author is trying to portray the reader needs to be familiar with the elements of literature. The story “Used to Live Here Once” by Jean Rhys, the poem “The Road not Taken”, by Robert Frost, and the poem “My Papa’s Waltz”, by Theodore Roethke, follow the elements of literature, and have the symbolism that if the reader was not familiar with could miss the meaning of the story or poem.…
