Finding Our Purpose
In "Losing my Cool" Williams uses the hip-hop culture as a motivation to find his purpose in life. “Yo, nigga,yoooo, nigaa, yoooo-oooo, niiiiga…” (2) is what Williams repeated under his breath. In "Losing My Cool" Williams is fiercely motivated by the hip-hop culture introduced to him. The hip-hop culture gave Thomas the purpose to keep it real among his black peers and make some type of status for himself. Beyond what the hip-hop culture influenced him to become Williams secretly searched to attain his real purpose: to find security and an identity for himself being that he is a mix of Black and White. What is needed to find purpose? "Drive" explains that purpose can be found by using the three concepts: goals, words and policies.
To find purpose in life you must have a set of goals you want to accomplish. In "Drive" it explained that when a pair of TOMS Shoes sells to you or me, it gives a free pair to a child in a developing country. TOMS explains they were "a for-profit company with giving at its core." (134) TOMS goals were to make profit but also give out free shoes to a child in need. TOMS purpose is to use profit as a catalyst in improving a person's well-being. In "Losing My Cool" a black woman yelled at Williams "You rich, white motherfuckers in your Murr-say-deez, go the fuck home!"(8) Williams questioned why the black woman would categorize them as white. Williams felt his pride being taken away due to the fact that he thought of himself as a black person. He then questioned his security and identity at this moment.. He studied the black boys in his barbershop as if they were role models. Williams had seen how the boys were influenced by the hip-hop culture and was very inspired. He explained that the "boys would never be singled out and dissed the way I had been. I decided I wanted whatever it was that protected them."(9) Williams was motivated by the boys and set out goals to
