In the book,” Fire and Fog,” by Dianne Day, she tells a story about San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Dianne Day explains how people suffer during and after the earthquake. Caroline Fremont Jones, 23 years old is one of the main characters who survive in the San Francisco earthquake and fire of, 1906. Fremont is an independent person, helpful citizen and a brave girl.
Fremont is an independent person who lives and works as a typist in San Francisco. Her father states, “My Dear Caroline stop glad you are safe stop imperative you quit your foolishness and come home stop will wire money if needed stop your loving father.”(pg.61). although her father wants her to live with him and agrees to support her, Fremont rejects his offer and wants to be independent with all the responsibilities. Event after the earthquake when Fremont become homeless and jobless she does not accept her father’s helps. Fremont states, “Father Stop no intention of returning to Boston stop my work is not foolishness stop my name is Fremont stop I no longer answer to Caro line.” (pg.63). this shows how Fremont does not want her father’s help because she is an independent girl who does like to depend on someone else. Fremont also tells her father to stop calling her job foolishness and she also said that her name is not Fremont.
Fremont is a helpful citizen who likes to help other people from her community. After the earthquake Fremont become a member on the Red Cross to help people that suffering from the earthquake. Mrs. Bartlett states “Let me give you the rest of your assignment in case I get busy with something while you’re off after Dr. Tyler.
