The fire was the boy's connection to civilization. When Ralph had Jack and the hunters in control of the fire and they neglected it in order to go hunting that created a great conflict. “ there was a ship out there. you said you would keep the fire going and you let it out. They may have seen us we might have gone home!” (70) The fire was there only way to return to proper civilization and attract rescuers to the island. The fire also represented civilization by creating light in the night time so the boys could see what was going on around them on the island.Which would prevent deaths and injuries. To begin with, the boys started off civilized by creating rules and electing a leader even tho they were miles and miles away from their proper civilization. From the beginning Jack felt Fire was not as important as hunting. but ralph felt fire was the most important thing throughout the novel. The civilization started dying down when jack and ralph started going off at each other. Ironically, it is because of a fire that jack lights at the end of the novel- in his attempts to hunt and kill ralph- that the boys are rescued.
To conclude the fire in Lord of the flies can be symbolized in many ways. Three main symbols would be civilization, rescue, and hope of getting off the island. The boys count on the fire to be rescued and survive in a civilized
