“First Job”

In her essay “First Job”, Iliana Roman, a mother and hair salon owner. Who became pregnant in high school and dropped out. She held several jobs, while studying to attain her GED, taking business classes at a community college. Iliana used her education to transform into a successful salon owner. Roman describes her traumatic testimony on how determined she was to make her life successful after she realized the mistake that she made earlier on in her life.
Roman accomplishment, even in times of fate, settles off for her any time throughout life. She determines to instill in her mind what she wants, why she wants it, and not letting anybody or anything get in her way. I have seen first-hand how the idea that hard work pays off is not a one dimensional mindset, that it can be applied to an aspects of life and yield success. “My children motivate me. You can always do better in life, and I am one to do better, better, better” (815).
Roman describe how learning can come with written and unwritten rules in life and on the job, including how to deal with obstacles, tough bosses, how to consider people, how to treat people, and harassment. Work ethic is a good trait to have when trying make it in the real world, like Roman did. In my life I try to keep a good work ethic and stay well motivated. But for me, it is easy to get motivated. But once I am motivation to do something, it clicks in and work ethic just comes normal. “I think if you set your mind to learn something you`ll learn it; there’s no stopping you” (815).
Our family is the most important people in our lives. What do you think? I think generally we sometimes don’t appreciate the kind of love and support we get from family members. Roman looked up to her father as an inspirational and wanted her children to look up to her as the same. Roman finally concluded cosmetology school, she felt in her heart that she would be successful in her own

During the last centuries B.C.E. Rome became a power not only recognized in Italy but in the Mediterranean world. The Roman Empire was one of the largest in world history. A common saying "All Roads Lead to Rome" alludes to this central center of technology, literature, and architecture. Rome became a great empire for many reasons: great rulers, great armies, a suitable location, and notable achievements from visionary builders. Rome's greatness grew out of its imperial program of conquering others and establishing colonies. This military expansion at once brought great material benefit to the Roman state and guaranteed wealth for Rome, the imperial city. Rome becomes a cosmopolitan capital where high living and material wealth become synonymous with personal importance and success. The Roman Triumph, especially in the Republican era was the crowning achievement of a Roman General. The procession of the Roman army, allowed within the city gates for this special event, captured leaders and slaves, and any treasure looted on campaign, was a grand spectacle of enormous proportions. Consuls, Praetors or Dictators were originally the only magistrates allowed to receive a Triumph, as they were the only officials with the authority to command a large enough force to deserve the honor. The honor was very important in Roman culture. Some people were borne into honorable families, usually politicians, and some had to gain respect honor and political nobility. Cato, Marius and Cicero were New Men, which ment that their ancestors did not…

She begins many of her sentences with: “I got…”, “I wanted…” and “ I was…”(814). Beginning sentences in this was is frowned upon in many post-middle school English and writing classes. Many professors believe that beginning a sentence in this manor creates a boring and repetitive work; furthermore, some may go as far to believe that it is juvenile and a sign of little education. Her sentences are, on average, short and choppy; consequently, there is little to no flow in the paper. Some may find it challenging to read this piece due to these factors. However, the reader can infer that Roman has perseverance through her writing style. Even though Roman is not the most learned person, which is obvious by her writing skills, she has combined hard work and perseverance to become a successful business woman. She proves that she would not allow her limited education to stop her from pursuing her goals in…

Perhaps family itself was the value that we were missing the most—a sense of togetherness that would unify us much more than anything else could. Yet we never did make that connection. Instead we found it best to try and act as though we knew what a functional family was as though we were doing a bad game of Simon Says. As Gary Soto recalls from his childhood, “I tried to convince them that if we improved the way we looked we might get along better in life” (Soto, 29). That was the way my fake family was. We knew the meaning of values, but in reality we did not put them into practice, whether it be out of laziness or simple antagonism for those we may or may not have viewed as inferior to our bloodline. Seldom attention was given to the values…

The consensus around school was that working at the local Gertens was a “dream job.” Often, while sitting in class, my attention would shift from the teacher to my older classmates as I would constantly overhear them talking about the ludicrous amounts of money they made at the local garden goods store. Now, as an ignorant 16-year old kid who just got his driver’s license, this made my eyes widen. For the first time in my life, the quest to acquire money was skyrocketing to the top of my priority list. My parents were slowly beginning to cut me off with the free hand-outs and now with the concept of gasoline in my life, I realized that to comfortably enjoy life you are going to need at least some financial support. Desperately, I committed to doing anything to get cash in my hands. I set my eyes on making the dream job my first job.…
