Five Forces Competitive Framework
Pizza is a kind of Italian origin and cuisine; it was spread to Australia by Italian immigrants from early 1920s. The pizza restaurants or shops main made and sold the pizzas. Toto's Pizza House (Toto's) is the first pizza shop established in Australia, it opened for business on July 1961, where the business has remained since. (Wikipedia,
2012) Nowadays in Australia, there are more than 3000 businesses of pizza, includes notable pizzerias and pizza chains. Some of those originated in Australia, such as
Pizza Haven, Toto’s Pizza House, etc; some of those are international chains, such as
Dominos’ Pizza, Pizza Hut, etc. The following we will analyze the competition of pizza industry under the Michael Porter’s ’Five Forces Competitive Framework’.
Market definition
Market definition mainly focuses on two aspects, product terms and geographic terms.
We consider the product terms to pizza restaurants. In pizza restaurants, their main products are traditional pizza, gourmet and specialty pizzas, pizza sides and others.
The pizza sides are some specialties with pizza, such as salads, chips, etc. It is a tool for differentiation between the industry players. The ‘others’ are some non-pizza related offerings, such as beverages and desserts. In this industry, the variable cost accounted a majority of total cost, the mainly include the purchase of raw material.
Fixed cost, as depreciation and rental, just occupied a small part of total cost.
In geographic terms, the pizza industry has more competition in an area which is higher populations. The higher populations are more advantageous because of the significantly larger number of consumers to target. It has more attractive to new players entering the industry. So the competition will be more incentive. In Australia, the Victoria and New South Wales are the two leading states in terms of competition of pizza restaurants, Queensland and Western Australia behind them.

The first Jimmy John’s was created in 1983 in Champaign, Illinois, by Jimmy John Liautaud. Liautaud founded Jimmy John’s on the idea of providing the gourmet sandwiches for a low price. The first Jimmy Johns was run out of a garage with used equipment, and without an ice machine for the drinks because there wasn’t any room. Liautaud grew interest in his sandwiches by giving out free samples to people around town, especially college students. As word spread about his sandwiches, Jimmy John’s began to gain acclaim and began to make money. (Gibbs, 2005)…

There are many definitions of leadership. The Collins English dictionary defines leadership as “the leader(s) of a party or group.” Yet true leadership is much more than that. A leader can be the chief executive officer of an organization, or a first year employee who leads his or her team to success behind the scenes. A leader might lead through official authority and power, yet just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connections. Teaching others to be a leader is a daunting task within itself (Pankaew, 2013).…

Although we love our modern-day version pizza pie, where did it all begin? In my research, I found several opinions of the origin, but there is a consensus that this baked goodness is over one thousand years old. Ed Behr of Art of Eating newsletter states, "The written record of the word pizza, in the sense of foccacia, goes back to the Codex Cajetanus of the year 997." And there is speculation that even Plato spoke of pizza in his Republic: "They will provide from their barley and flour from their wheat and kneading and cook these… they (the cakes) will also have relishes – salt… and of olives and cheese; and onions and greens." Although this is probably not the case, it is interesting to imagine one of our great minds of history philosophizing about something so miniscule. Behr continues to suggest that "pizza is an alternation of the Greek word pitta, which was introduced to southern Italy during the Byzantine conquest of the sixth century." Evelyn Slomon, author of The Pizza Book, states, "The name [pizza] comes from a southern Italian corruption of the Latin adjective picea (peechia), which described the black tar-like coating underneath the placenta, a pie made of the finest flours, a topping of cheese mixed with honey, and a seasoning of bay leaves and oil." Athough the origin of the name is in question, we do know that because tomatoes…

The biggest threat in the US Grocery/Discount Retailer industry is competition. In particular, the main players are Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target. These firms also face competition from wholesalers such as BJ’s and Costco. Wal-Mart, as the industry leader, has adopted a cost leadership generic strategy. In the past, most firms have not been able to match Wal-Mart’s “everyday low prices.” The problem is that Wal-Mart’s barrier to entry (economies of scale) and strength (supply-chain management) can be easily replicated with sufficient resources. By definition, discount retailers are competing to see who can offer the lowest prices. This places a heavy burden on all firms to maintain a profit margin as they do so.…

As of late, pizza throughout the United States is consumed on a daily basis. Each year, the pizza market is a $30 billion industry. However, during the early years of our country pizza could only be found in high Italian populated neighborhoods located in big cities like Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia. In the last two decades, one of the most fundamental questions emerging in strategic management is how firms achieve and sustain competitive advantage. In a simplified world, understanding how firms achieve and maintain superior or abnormal returns means comprehending how firms position themselves in a certain market, what they produce and how they use resources at their disposal to do so. In this sense we may distinguish between the positional perspective, developed by Michael Porter, according to which achieving competitive advantage is the result of exploitation of imperfections in the market, the resource based perspective, which states that competitive advantage lies in the ownership of valuable resources, and the dynamic capabilities view, which follows the resource based view but also adds the dimension of time in the equation. In this essay, I will compare and contrast these three views after having described them, and will end by illustrating how they can all be brought together.…
