Origin of flaming gorge and the green river.
The myth of flaming gorge is the most popular way of why, and how Flaming gorge got such a, “unique name”. First, the last part of it’s name isn’t a myth, it’s a fact, gorge is part of it because, flaming gorge, is a gorge itself. Definition of gorge: “a narrow valley between hills or mountains, typically with steep rocky walls and a stream running through it”. ”But, the flaming part of the name is where the myth comes in. A man named John, would go horseback riding every day, up the gorge. He never went at a specific time, but mostly tried to up the gorge in the morning for just one reason.The sunset, when the sunset hit the gorge in
the morning it would hit the rocks, gorge and trails in such a way it made it look like it was on fire, or flaming. John at first thought that this was just one time, because, he had gone so many times in the morning. After, that experience John decided to go up at the time to see if it was just that morning. But sure enough, the rocks, the gorge and the river all looked like they were flaming.
So, John decided to name it Flaming Gorge one, after the way in the sunset and two simply because it’s a gorge. Now of course, like all myths this is not all the way actually true. This named could've been picked out bye indians, people or just tourist. But, the most popular way that the name of this gorge is, this myth about a man.
