Mr. Shiftlet and the Mother’s Selfishness Erich Fromm psychoanalysis, social psychologist, sociologist, humanistic philosopher, and democratic socialist once said, “Selfish persons are incapable of loving others, but they are not capable of loving themselves either.” This quote describes Mr. Shiftlet and the mother, the main characters of this short story, spot on. In Flannery O’Connor, “The Life You Save May Be Your
Own,” the nomadic amputee, Mr. Shiftlet, makes himself seem like a trustworthy, selfless, young man to the mother of a mentally challenged girl, who in many occasions tries to marry of her daughter as a result of not wanting to take care of her anymore. Both of these characters have a clear idea of what they want; Mr Shiftlet wants a car and the mother wants someone to take care of her daughter instead of herself. They both succeed, yet end up alone, in result of their selfishness. When first meeting the mother and daughter duo, he introduces himself, and then says “I can tell you my name is Tom T. Shiflet and I come from Tarwater, Tennessee, but you never have seen me before: how you know I ain’t lying?” (O’Connor 94). Shiftlet then elaborates saying “Lady, people don’t care how they lie. Maybe the best I can tell you is, I’m a man; but listen lady, what is a man?”
(O’Connor 94). Bottom line, he explains how easy it is to lie and even foreshadowing the event that he will betray them. Throughout the whole conversation he keeps staring at the car and later finds out

Cervoni 2 that it hasn’t been used since the husband died fifteen years ago. He uses this as an excuse to fix the car, which later on in the story, he steals. Mr. Shiftlet cares very little of the mother and daughter, considering that when he ditched Lucynell at the diner, without even thinking twice. He just thought about how lonely he was. “He was more depressed than

Cédric and Dorian glanced at each other. Then everyone heard a faint engine sound, “Get off the road and get down, quick!” urged Cédric. Long considered one of the innovators of photorealism, Audrey Flack emerged on the scene in the late 1960s with paintings that embraced magazine reproductions of movie stars along with Matza cracker boxes and other mundane objects, that referred ironically to Pop Art. As one of the first of these artists to enter the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, Flack later came to excel in vanitas paintings that combined painted renderings of black and white photographs along with detailed arrangements of elegant objects including fruits, cakes, chocolates, strings of pearls, lipsticks, tubes of paint, and glass wine goblets. In works such as Wheel of Fortune (1977-78), she would represent decks of playing cards and other ephemera related to gambling, adding a mirror and human skull, for good measure. Her recent exhibition of Cibachrome prints, curated by Garth Greenan for Gary Snyder Project Space, is titled “Audrey Flack Paints A Picture” and is accompanied by five actual paintings. This show reveals the painstaking process employed in making these fresh and original paintings from the late 1970s through the early 1980s during a highly significant and intensely productive period of her career.…

    Indifference In Night

“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.” This quote by Elie Wiesel says a lot. Indifference is dangerous. We have a moral responsibility to help others most of the time. There are moments where it’s okay to be indifferent. This moral responsibility that we have is important to keep our indifference in check. We have a moral responsibility to help right the wrongs in the world but to an extent.…

    Elie Wiesel's Heroism

    • 990 Words
    • 4 Pages

A quote that exemplifies this is by Elie Wiesel, who once said, "When a person doesn't have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude." Elie Wiesel is a writer, who was put through Auschwitz as a Jew during the Holocaust. He has been given many reasons to give up on humanity, but he chooses not to. Though Wiesel has seen unspeakable things, he still has love to give. A second example of this is human rights activist Malala Yousafzai. She fights for education for all, specifically girls in third world countries. While speaking on anti-discrimination, she said, "There should be no discrimination against languages people speak, skin color, or religion." In today's world, though we like to pretend otherwise, there is a lot of hate centered around those things. People see someone different and instantly separate themselves from that person. They become ignorantly hateful. Malala speaks against that hatefulness, and rejects the idea that people should be treated differently based on those things. A final example is Mattie stepanek, a poet and a peace advocate. He was diagnosed with a rare muscular dystrophy, and only lived to fourteen. A quote of his, speaking about peace, is, "If we simply, but profoundly, choose to make peace an attitude and a habit and a reality, peace is possible." Stepanek is saying that if one acted peacefully, and then others did the same, the world would be filled with peace. Just like Wiesel, Mattie's life had not been kind to him. He had valid reasons to be angry, but through it all he smiled, and imagined a world where everyone could do the…

The lie she told to convince the detectives to take her case to investigate Thursby was an extravagant one and was convincing to the audience however not convincing enough to the lead character but he was intrigued by Brigid. She then turned on her irresistible damsel in distress charm when she asked Spade “Do they have to know about me, I mean - can't you shield me so that I won't have to answer their questions. I can't tell you now. I will later when I can. You've got to trust me, Mr. Spade. Oh, I'm so alone and afraid. I've got nobody to help me if you won't help me. Be generous, Mr. Spade. You're brave. You're strong. You can spare me some of that courage and strength surely. Help me, Mr. Spade. I need help so badly. I've no right to ask you, I know I haven't, but I do ask you. Help me”. He caught on to her act and called her out on it by saying “You won't need much of anybody's help. You're good. It's chiefly your eyes, I think, and that throb you get in your voice when you say things like 'Be generous, Mr. Spade”. She then reply’s with “I deserve…

In the Article On Kindness Thomas Hobbes views the act of kindness as a “psychological absurdity”. He believes that it is a selfish act only committed for self-pleasure for the true beast inside man. Nearly two centuries later it is clearly evident that mankind still believes in the principal of self-interest, and yet those individuals who do decide to be a part of society and show acts of kindness are viewed by eyes of suspicion because, are they committing an act of kindness based on benefits? Or are they actually attempting to make an effort to be kind to others? Compared to Phillips and Taylor’s Article Against Kindness it seen that they share similar views and they too believe in Thomas Hobbes theories that today it is only multi-millionaire…
