“Stop!” commanded Elisaveta. She slid off the bicycle seat and stood erect, looking straight ahead at the curve in the road.
“Why?” asked Cédric. Everyone dismounted.
She continued staring ahead in silence.
Saban hobbled to her side and faced Cédric and Dorian. “She possesses a sixth sense. You must listen to her.”
“A machine is approaching,” Elisaveta whispered.
Cédric and Dorian glanced at each other. Then everyone heard a faint engine sound, “Get off the road and get down, quick!” urged Cédric. Dorian helped Saban, and Elisaveta followed as they hurried into a field. The vehicle rounded the corner. Cédric waited until last to hide. They hid as best they could in the cold, wet, long grass. Dorian centered the Gendarme in the pistol’s sights. “Your papers are in order.” He handed them back to Cédric. “You may put your things back in your pockets. I should arrest you, but instead, I will warn you. Do your searching before curfew. Here is my card. If you see any escapees or anyone suspicious, contact me. Saban limped over and patted Cédric on the shoulder, smiled and said, “You are a genius.” Cédric smiled back, “I have had lots of practice.” Cédric smiled as he approached Elisaveta, “Next time I will act quickly on your warning.” Elisaveta returned the smile. Cédric continued, “Shall we continue our …show more content…

In January of ‘42, Hitler’s Final Solution went into effect. Thus began the arrest and deportation of Belgium Jews to death camps. On orders from his superior, Dom Bruno proceeded to the hamlet of Hodbomont, to act as chaplain at a home for the blind. Dom Bruno realized the home also hid several Jewish adults and children brought there by a group of Christians opposed to the Nazi policies. A prominent lawyer and leader of the Christian group, Albert van den Berg, became a close collaborator with Dom Bruno. When it became unsafe to continue hiding Jews at this location, the home was closed and its occupants dispersed to other locations. Dom Bruno returned to Mont-César and dedicated himself exclusively to rescuing and finding places of refuge for

As the narrator, Melinda Sordino, awaits her first day as a freshman at Merryweather High she describes, “the school bus wheezes to my corner” (pg 3). The authors’ use of personification describes the heaviness and panic that is set into the setting. When Melinda arrives at school, she describes, as others’ talk behind her back, the feeling that “words climb up my throat” (pg 5). This personification describes the want to speak up but is silenced by her feelings of anger and disparity. Melinda’s experience so far at high school hasn’t been perfect, but has rather worn her out “my bed is sending out serious nap rays… The fluffy pillows and warm comforter are more powerful than I am” (pg 16). This passage shows that she would…

The Reserve Police Battalion 101 was a unit of German Order Police, known as ‘Ordnungspolizei’ during World War II. Battalion 101 was made up of 500 men, with ordinary backgrounds from Germany and played a central role in the implementation of the Final Solution. The men of the battalion took part in rounding up Jews, the polish, Gypsies another other minorities, deportation to concentration camps, and the most sickening the mass shooting of tens of thousands of civilians. The Battalion 101’s participation in the Final Solution, resulted in the deportation of 45,200 Jews to the Treblinka Concentration Camp, and it is estimated that from July 1942 and November 1943, the Police Battalion 101 was responsible for the mass shootings of Jews that resulted in over 38,000 deaths. Before the war, most of the members of Reserve Police Battalion 101 never harmed anyone, and these men who were from simple, ordinary backgrounds became cold-blooded killers and committed some of the worst crimes humanity has ever seen. Christopher Browning’s “Ordinary Men” is almost like a psychological analysis that examines how the members of Battalion 101…
