Flatworms are acoelomates, meaning they do not have a coelom or body. Thus, flatworms have thin, flattened solid bodies. Segmented worms are coelomates, meaning they do have a body cavity, and their cylindrical shaped bodies (due to the presence of a coelom) are divided into sections.
Flatworms have an incomplete digestive system and a single opening on their underside that functions as both mouth and anus. Food enters, and wastes leave through the same pharyngeal opening. In contrast, segmented worms have a complete internal digestive
tract with two openings. Food enters the mouth (anterior end) and waste is released through the anus (posterior end). Lastly, unlike flatworms, segmented worms have respiratory systems and closed circulatory systems.
