Flatworms Lab Report
The results showed that the flatworms moved faster away from light toward darkness when it treated with caffeine. In contrast, it moved slower away from light toward darkness when it treated with ethanol. For the first specimen, flatworm 1(Fredrick), treated with water used as a control, then with 0.5 % EtOH and 1% EtOH. The speed was decreasing as the trials were repeated for each different concentration compared to the control trials of water was increasing. Higher concentration of EtOH caused the flatworms to move slower toward darkness than the lower concentration. The same procedures with drug were repeated but with different flatworm (lightning). There were two specimens of flatworms used to examine caffeine effects on the flatworms. Water used as a control with 0.0001M caffeine and 0.001M caffeine on flatworm 3 (flippy). There had been three trials done on each of the factors. The speed was increasing among the three trials, which it took them less time to get to the dark side. The same steps with same drug were repeated but with different flatworm. Flatworm 4 (flippin flippy) had similar results to flatworm 3 except different speeds due to different worm that had been used. They were faster in caffeine than in water (control). The higher concentration of caffeine, the higher speed to move to the darkness. The significance of the study to see how different flatworms reacted to different drugs, such as, depressants and stimulants in the presence of light. It shows how the central nervous system would react to these different drugs, and what other effects can do to the other systems of the organisms, and it could be compared to human body or other organisms.     In order to understand a little bit about the effects of common household drugs such as nicotine and caffeine on pulsation rate, an experiment was conducted with Lumbriculus Variegattus (Blackworms). In week 1, we observed the basal rate of three different worms, and then placed the same three worms on different concentrations of caffeine and nicotine. “Caffeine is known to act as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain; it promotes sleep and suppresses aurosal, binding to the adenosine neurotransmitter receptor to block its inhibitory action” (CCNY lab manual, 2014). The first step our group did was to place the Daphnia into a clean depression slide. Next, we added a small drop of the spring water and put a cover slip over the slide. Then, we waited for one minute prior to placing the slide on the microscope in order to allow time for either solution or the drug to take its effect.
