Flea infestations are devastating and cause you sleepless nights. They are extremely stressful to deal with when they are not taken care of promptly. When many pet owners are faced with the challenge of flea infestations, they do not usually know exactly where to go. This is because there are many flea medicines available in the market today with varying opinions about them from the people that have used them. Before the experiment we hypothesized that if you place the water fleas in alcohol then their heart rate will slow down, and if you place them in caffeine then their heart rate will raise. For this experiment we needed water fleas, tap water, two pipettes, a microscope, a stopwatch, two glass micro slides, caffeine (concentrations: 1.0, 1.5, 2), alcohol (concentrations: 2.0, 4.0, 6.0). We then used the pipette to place one water flea into a concentration of water as the control. Once the control was established we proceeded to add different concentrations of caffeine and alcohol to the slide. We used a stopwatch to observe the heart rate and found that at first the rate decreased and then increased as we tested higher concentrations of caffeine.
