Symptoms of this infection are usually mild.
Treatments:
E. vermicularis can be best treated by an anthelmintic drug called mebendazole. Albendazole, pyrantel pamoate, and levamisole may also be used to treat pinworms. A longer course of treatment would be the use of piperazine. First dosage of medication is to be taken the day it is administered and the second to be taken two weeks after. This two-week time span is to help kill any newly-acquired pinworms. There is NOT a vaccine obtainable for pinworms.
Prevention:
Pin worms can be prevented best by washing hands, keeping nails short, and sanitizing hands with soap and water frequently. To prevent re-infection, clothing, bedding, towels, and toys, should soaked in hot water. Dusty areas, floors, and furniture should be vacuumed well and any other contaminated surfaces should be sanitized.
