This is a scholarly paper that will discuss Florence Nightingale environmental model. It will discuss application of her theory in nursing environment such as Alzheimer’s unit. Contributions to the medical field, and emphasize key points of her theory of nursing. The paper will discuss and compare two other theorists such as Dorothea Orem and Dorothy Johnson by emphasizing the importance of using Nightingales theory in Alzheimer’s unit setting.

Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, on May 12, 1820 (George, 2011). She was a well educated woman and when she was in her early years of life she experienced a “calling” from God for her to serve humankind (Fitzpatrick & Whall, 2005). Nightingale became a heroine in Great Britain as a result of her work in the Crimean War (George, 2011). She was concerned about the situation of the English solders and she wanted to make a improvement in basic hygiene wound care unsanitary condition sanitary food clean water and she expose impact of nursing to reduce human mortality and morbidity (Fitzpatrick & Whall, 2005). Not only she fought bureaucracy for food, clean bedding and safe environment for the soldiers, she helped also to establish library assistance for letter writing, a banking system, help and provide support for families of the wound and dying solders Florence Nightingale is an inspiration to all nurses; she is the pilot or the mother of nursing (George, 2011). Nightingale developed a nursing theory throughout observation and experience and for her was very important compassion, knowledge of nutrition and sanitation. She differentiated nursing from medicine and nurse need to take care of the patient rather then illness. She introduced important of preventing human where medicine offer cure for illness (Fitzpatrick & Whall, 2005). Her theory is base for our practice today
