Florence Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing. She was born in 1820 in a wealthy family. At the young age of twenty-four, she was touched by God to help the sick and less fortunate. According to Nightingale the environment, the patient lives in can have a major impact on their health. She created a model which focuses on the following components that have been critical to nursing: Patient Health of houses, ventilation, and Warming, Light, Noise, Variety, Bed and Bedding, Cleanliness of Rooms and Walls, Personal, Cleanliness, Nutrition, Chattering, hopes, and advice.

The health of houses related to the client having access to clean air and clean water. The nurse must maintain an environment that produces clean air and water for a client to maintain good health. Ventilation relate to what the client breaths in. Nightingale stressed the importance of stable room temperature. The patient body temperature should not be too cold or too warm (MacQueen, 2007). An example of nursing intervention to keep the client and room warm would be by adjusting clothing and modifying the environment temperature either by increasing heat or cool air, and keeping the room free of unpleasant order and keeping the room ventilated. It will assist me as I make a decision related to nursing intervention, plan patient care, predict the outcome of care and evaluate my patient outcome. After researching Nightingale’s model of “sanitary nursing”, I realize that personal cleanliness is not just extended to the environment but to the patient and nurse. Nightingale’s theory becomes a tool that will assist me to think critically as I plan and provide nursing care to the client.
