“Survival of the fittest... The common guppy lives. ... That’s the way it is and that’s the way it’s going to be.” Florence Wechek is a like common guppie. She never expected the world to take care of her, and she does not despair in a troubled time, but continues to work steadily and continually. She knows how to get along with what she has because she is just an average person with everyday responsibilities. This quote shows her purpose by saying that we need these kind of people and even if you are just an average person you can survive too. “Her morning routine was unvaried and efficient “The only bad parts were cooking and eating alone”(Frank, 2). “She did not understand,[she] could not become interested in the politics of the middle east”(Frank, 4). She doesn't care what happens because she doesn’t think it’s important or will affect her. When the bombs drop she needs to come to terms with reality because she needs to break out of the little world she has made for herself. After The Day Florence still continues working in the Western Union and Florence soon realizes that she needs to change how she is because of the disaster. She becomes a different person than she was before The Day because she’s forced to come in contact with people and her surroundings. Florence needed to break out of her shell and pay attention to more than herself and stop gossiping and being nosy in others business in order to survive.
