2.) Sophie's views changed as she grew older because she slowly began to think that what the Nazi people and Hitler are doing is wrong. In paragraph one Sophie "believed that Hitler would help Germany achieve greatness, fortune, and prosperity." Later on in her life, as Sophie grew older, she understood more about what was happening. In paragraph 4 it states, "she soon found herself unwilling to give her teachers the answers they wanted but she felt were wrong." …show more content…
She knew the answers to every question but she didn't want to answer the questions because she thought that what she was doing was wrong. She thought that people shouldn't be judged on by their race, religion, and duty. Even more, Sophie felt "frustrated and stifled." She wanted to speak out, but she was afraid of getting in trouble.
3.) In addition to the ideas expressed by National Socialism, the students were motivated to become active in Hitler Youth because they got to have power over the adults and teachers.
Also, the peer pressure made the students become more active in the Hitler Youth because they think that everyone is doing it so they should also do it. In paragraph 15 Henry Metelmann's teacher said, "'You see, all your friends in class have become members... 'Surely so many cannot be wrong in their choice while you are the only one who is right...'" The teacher is trying to get the kid to become active in the Hitler Youth by saying that everyone else is doing it, so it must be right. Also, in paragraph 14 it states, "Never before had students felt so much power over adults and school authority." The kids in the book were smashing the windows of a teacher who gave them low grades, but the police didn't do much about
it.
4.) Based on the context clues, I can infer that the meaning of the word alienated as used in Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler's Shadow means, to be isolated or separated from the other people. The context clue that helped me figure out the meaning of alienated is in paragraph 6 when it states, "In school, Sophie felt alienated because she could not confide in a classmate or teacher." The words "Sophie felt" and "could not confide in a classmate or teacher" made me think that alienated means: to be isolated or separated from the other people because it is saying that Sophie feels separated from the other people because she has a different opinion and though. I felt like this fits best in the sentence. This is how I figured out the definition of the word alienated.
5.) Based on context clues, word relationships, and word parts, I can determine that the meaning of the word standardized as used in paragraph 9 means, to adapt to a new standard or system. The word relationship of the word standardized is a verb because it is used to describe the new school's curriculum. The word part of the word standardized is standard, which means "a level of quality or attainment," and the suffix ize means "to render, make." Therefore, when you add the definitions of the word parts together, the definition is to adapt to a new standard or system. The context clues that helped me figure out my definition of the word standardized is in paragraph 9 when it states, "Sophie's frustration during high school stemmed from the Nazis' new standardized school curriculum." Sophie didn't like adapting to the new standard or system because she didn't like what she was learning. Though, she was almost forced to learn it because of Hitler.
