Explain Why The Pigman Should Be Banned
Did you know that 11,300 books have been banned for their content? The Pigman is a book that is banned in some schools because of the inappropriate content within it. The characters use drugs and alcohol, are dishonest, and they display violent actions , therefore The Pigman should be banned due to this immature content.
One of the biggest reasons The Pigman should be banned because it has a lot of drug and alcohol use. On page 45 it says “John jumped at my outburst and then slowly sipped his beer.” This is showing that John is drinking under age. This might show the reader that it is okay to drink underage. Another reason to show that this book uses drugs is on page 2 “I was never as surprised as the poor guy who were in the boys’ John on the first floor sneaking a cigarette, because the boys’ John is right next to the Dean's office …show more content…
and a flock of gestapo would race in there and blame them.” This also shows that they smoked underage and even try to get through by hiding it and blaming other people for their actions.
In addition to drug and alcohol use the Pigman also has a lot of dishonesty. On page 28 it says “‘The L & J Fund, Mr. Pignatti.’ I bit my lip. ‘I'll be glad to send you ten dollars, Miss Truman. Where do I send it?’” This explains that they were lying about their names and that they had a fake organization they were just trying to get money for alcohol and drugs. In addition to that they were pretty much fooling a old man to give them money. Another reason for dishonesty is on page 45-46 “”Where were you?” I went to drama-club meeting” “until now?”...” She is lying to her mom about where she was, they were actually at the Pigman's. I think this might influence readers to lie, for that it should be banned.
Furthermore the pigman is a bad book because there is a lot of violence.
Violence is a big part of the story as shown on page 142 “I plowed into him punching his face like it was a sack of flour.” Violence is never the way to go because they later got arrested. This book might teach kids to solve there problems with violence like these kids did. The final reason is on page 146 “Tears began to roll down my cheeks, and she raised her hand and slapped me.” This show child abuse. This also shows how badly her mom treats her and this may ruin family relationships.
Many people argue that The Pigman should not be banned. For example it displays Friendship and Examples of stuff you should not do. This might be true because it teaches you a good life lesson. On the other hand there is more evidence that the book should not be read for example drug and alcohol use, violence, profanity and lots of dishonesty. Like on page 65 “Don't be a jackass” This shows that there is a lot of harmful language that should not be unveiled to young readers. Even though this may give them an example of what not to do it will probably give them a bad idea
too.
