(Author's Note: Roger is an avid fly fisherman. He takes this activity seriously and passionately. His goal is not ‘passing the time.' This is an Art for him. An additional benefit of fishing is the energizing force he encounters that enables him to walk through a serious illness.)

Fly-Fishing Is an Art
I have been Fly-Fishing since I was 13 years old. At this writing, I am nearing 77 years old, so I have been doing it for a long time. Of course, there were some years I did not fish.

Practicing this sport all these years does not necessarily qualify me to be an expert Fly-Fisher, but I have gained a lot of experience down through the years that I would like to share.

I am self-taught. It is not difficult to learn. With some instruction and practice, anyone can pick it

For me, it takes much thought and preparation to go fishing... from making the actual fly, loading, and unloading my vehicle, taking the trip, through the varied experiences, and the results of each event.

Preparation for Fly-Fishing
Preparing for a Fly-Fishing outing requires a lot more of 'little tasks' than when preparing for a spinning rod trip.

Typically, when I leave the lake from my last fishing trip, I know what needs to be done for future trips.
Some of the most essential items needed are the reel, the line, the leader, and the tippet.

When I arrive home from my fishing, I strip out the line and dress it with a cleaner. If this is not done, there may be a coiled line. This cleaning method relaxes the line so that the coiling of the line doesn't occur.

Then the leaders must be checked. If too much leader is lost in fishing, a new one needs to be attached to the line. These leaders are 7 1/2 feet long and tapered.

Next, there are about 20 inches of tippet with no taper, which are knotted to the leader. Care must be taken when making knots. There are knots for several applications as

I am writing in response to your request that I analyze Stewart Brand's “The Case for De-Extinction: Why We Should Bring Back the Woolly Mammoth” and make a recommendation for or against publication in The Shorthorn. I have considered the rhetorical appeals of Brand’s piece and determined that a large majority of students would find this to be unappealing due to the large amount of Christians, Catholics, Muslims, and other religious groups on campus, so therefore, it should not be published. This topic is very controversial and most likely will not persuade the UTA community in agreeing with Brand’'s viewpoints.…

There are many different characteristics that make a person a true leader. Odysseus is a fictional character from a fantasy epic poem known as “The Odyssey.” He traveled on a twenty year journey with many men along with him but in the end all of his men perished; Odysseus can be classified as a leader and a hero along with a man named Ernest Shackleton. Shackleton is a real life man who went on an expedition to reach Antarctica in the years 1914 to 1916. He also had a whole crew with him for the journey and he saved all of them. When comparing leadership of these two men the three most important traits to take into consideration are confidence, balance between tasks and interpersonal relationships, and the ability to stay on track.…

When fishing for largemouth bass it is important that you study the water. it doesn't even hurt to ask others if u know any that have fished there. I have fished many of ponds before where I have heard a lot of great things about a pond and didn't catch a thing. That is the game of fishing some people enjoy it ad some people would rather not “waste their time” . in the sport of bass fishing you have to have patience. There could be hours that u don't catch a thing but the only thing u can do is keep fishing. Waiting to catch a fish can be extremely boring at times but what i have heard from others is that it is just best if u think about the outcome of waiting to catch a fish. Some years it's really tough to catch something, then there was like the summer of ‘07. We caught over 300 fish in that one week. Fishing is really special to me, my grandpa was basically a father figure to me and we bonded through it. He would take me every weekend and fish until the sun goes down. Now that he is gone, I find in myself to keep fishing, since it has become a true love and passion. My uncle has filled that father figure role in my life these past couple years. Shows up to my golf meets, supports my decisions in life, pushes me to be better every day. He is a very careful kind of guy. He is always prepared for the worst, even when we are our fishing in the boat. As the week goes on it becomes more challenging to not sleep in for an extra hour. We really didn't get out onto the water until nine that morning. There was still some fog out on the water, but it was good enough to drive across the lake. See, from where we put in the boat is around twenty miles from where we actually fish. This was always a problem because this would eat up all the gas in the tank. Later that day, it was around four. It takes around 1 hour to drive the boat back to the ramp. I'm starting to pack…

There is no reason for me to stop fishing. I cannot stop, nor will I. Sure, there may be some discomfort, but I will never admit defeat to the elements. As long as I stand on my two feet, I will continue to fish, continue to inhale the fresh dawn air, and continue to feel the crisp morning breeze in my face. My mind is much too strong to lose to my body. If I wake up in the morning, I will cast my net, reel in my catch, and head for home, head back to my ungrateful household. After all the sacrifices I have made, this is the thanks I get.…

The time period from 1775 to 1830 was full of changes. The United States was developing into its own country, with its own freedoms. As the government began to settle, the issue of slavery was ever present. Nobody was quite sure of how to handle slavery. While some people fought to have slavery abolished, others completely opposed the idea of no longer having slaves. It was during this time period that many slaves managed to gain their freedom; however slavery as an institution continued to expand. Even though the many states passed laws outlawing the practice of slavery, the slave trade in the states that still allowed slavery grew immensely.…

Fish have lots of protein and are very healthy. Most people think just because they don't have a fishing pole and hooks they cannot get fish. Nothing could be farther from the truth, a lot of deferent fish hooks, spears and traps can be made of wood and carved with a knife. If you are fishing with a hook and line there are a few important things you will need. You will need a hook, line, and bait. If you don't have these things they can be easily made. To make a fish hook all you need is a knife and some wood or bone. A very simple and effective hook to make is a gorge hook. All you need to do is take a stick, break it to the length needed then sharpen it into a point at both ends. If you don't have a line you can make one out of tough plant fibers. Basswood, elm, cedar, nettle, yucca are very good plans to use. The fiber will be easier to work with if it is soaked in water for a few minutes. To make the fibers into strong line, tie two ends together, then start twisting the fibers clockwise, twist each one individually and not together, until tight. Then wrap them together in a counter clockwise and tie them at the end. The opposite twisting and wrapping help keep the line from unwinding. To get bait use bugs or worms. When you fish cut open the belly to see what they are eating. If you don't want to stay with your line for hours there are things to do so you don't have to sit there with it. You can make a Twitch-up…
