Problem: What method would consistently test the foam and ensure it has the correct density?
Background: There are words that need to be understood before executing the experiment. The first thing you need to know is density. Density is a measure of mass per unit of volume. The reason for testing density of doors because doors must contain a density of 14.34lbs per ft3 of foam, or it will collapse if the density is too high. If the density is too low, it won’t allow for normal expansion during weather changes. You may have a uncertainty of plus or minus 0.5lb per ft3 (“Open Door”) Uncertainty is the range of possible values that lie between the actual value. In order to find the density, you need two main measurements volume and mass. Mass is the amount of substance present and will be constant regardless of location (Notes).. Volume is the amount of space something takes up (Notes). The last key thing is to calculate using significant figures. Significant figures is a way to show that no calculation is …show more content…
When measuring the foam blocks, don’t apply pressure to the blocks, or you may have imprecise measurements. Another precaution while doing the lab is don’t hit your partners with the materials because someone can get injured.
Hypothesis: I think using the method of significant figures can help test the foam because it allows the measurements to be more precise and accurate.
Materials: The things need for this lab are seven foam blocks, a ruler, a scale, pencil, calculator and paper
Procedure: There is a step-by-step procedure for this lab:
You must first use scale to measure the mass for each foam block, and make sure to include a uncertainty of plus or minus .05g for the mass.
The second step is to find the volume of each block. In order to do that, you must find the Length, Width and the Height and multiply them. You measure the sides with a ruler to the nearest hundredth of a
