Folgers Competitive Process
1. Folgers is likely to use repetitive process. This is mostly because they have standardize products with a variety of options. Another reason why we believe Folgers uses repetitive process is their practice of mass production. We noticed that Folgers has about 550 employees, but it also has multiple manufacturing operations, making us assume these employees are not required to have significant skill in order to produce products. We believe that Ohori uses batch processing because they are a small-capacity company and their products are customized. They are a low-volume company because each batch is 30 pounds or less, meaning their workers must be highly skilled.

2. The goal of Folgers repetitive process is to produce their products on a large scale at a low cost. By following this motto, Folgers focuses on having their customers experience the coffee from the comfort of their home. So, by focusing on a specific customer experiences allows them to use the repetitive process appropriately. Ohori’s uses batch processing for the goal of providing superior quality and taste to its customer, as well as enhancing the customer experience. Since Ohori is a small shop, they depend on humans for the quality of their product, not computer. The operations layout will be different of Ohori’s and Folgers. Ohori’s is process layout, which means that they have functional grouping of activates. We believe they have a process layout because they match up with the qualities of process layouts, which are: varied, made to order products, low volume, large storage space, and a fluctuating demand. Folgers fits more under product layout, as they have more sequential arrangements of activities. The qualities of a product layout include: standardized, made to stock products, high volume, small storage space, and a stable

General Dynamics (GD) has realized a long-standing history of success delivering product and service solutions since being formed in 1952. They have purposely divested themselves of technology, product and service offerings in an effort to remain focused on their core competencies and primary customer; the United States Department of Defense. While GD’s primary customer remains the DoD, they have diversified their offerings to adjacent markets within the DoD (e.g, Information Technology and Cybersecurity solutions). GD has also acquired Gulfstream and Jet Aviation, both companies that deliver aircraft and support services within the privately owned aircraft industry in an attempt to diversify their customer base.…

In an assembly line the work moves in an efficiently and orderly manner from one workstation to the next until the finished product comes off from the end of the line. This layout is suitable for mass production where the demand for a product is stable and volume is high. The kinds of products that are made on the assembly line are products that are standard for a general market and not for a particular customer. If it were for a particular customer, they would be in the cellular layout. Here there is no signage used because each individual knows their job and know where they need to go at certain times of the day. The advantage of the product layout is the efficiency and the ease of its use. The only disadvantage that can be seen here is the inflexibility it has. Let’s say that the product design had to be changed, there would be a lot of time that will be wasted on trying to assembly a new line or fix the one that is already there. Although that is a disadvantage for the product layout, ere the cycle time and the flow time of the product are substantially low compared to a cellular layout because all hands are on deck and are working together. The level of inventory left on the floor is minimum if not any and there is no waste here when it comes to people walking around trying to…
