Poetry is a timeless form of literature that has been influential for over 4000 years, with the first example of poetry discovered 2000 B.C. Poetry is the backbone of society’s creative outlet for the written word. Welcome ladies and gentlemen to STCC FM, I’m your host Ben Bowering. We have the first episode of a new segment this week, ‘burning poetry’ today. On our show this afternoon I will be explaining why Poetry has endured the test of time and remains an important part of modern society. This first episode our focus will be on the importance of family and finding identity through the wonders of poetry. This will be shown by the work of Seamus Heaney in the poem ‘Follower’.
Follower as a poem has a mixture of themes depending on the interpretation however they all involve similar messages. The poem is set on a family owned and run farm, narrated from the point of view of a son who is constantly following in the footsteps of his amazing father who he valued so highly.

The use of similes to liken the father to objects that show power is the sons way of describing what his father was to him. This is an important subject matter to intensify its importance among modern day society. In a world with so many social media outlets to falsify ideals of looks and personalities. It is portrayed in the poem as the son wants to be like his father, similar to someone seeing an unrealistic photo on Instagram or Facebook and wanting to look the same. The age of social media has caused many people to lose track of their identity. The son is in a struggle for own identify however he has a realistic role model to admire rather than the unrealistic idols forced to us today in modern
