When things don’t work the way they should, people start to worry. They know that they need something to change. This is what Fiorina explains in chapter The Rise of The Washington Establishment about voting. The main focus of this chapter is the issues of self interest related to government and its congressmen, bureaucrats, and voters.…
A constitutional democracy is a government based on written law. A constitutional system keeps the power of the government in check through fragmentation, decentralization of power, and appropriate checks and balances. The United States moved to a constitutional democracy after the Declaration of Independence in 1776 which separated the American colonies from control by England.…
The House of Cards is a modern day dramatization of today’s government and follows the ascent of Frank Underwood and his wife Claire to the White House. The show depicts today’s government as ruthless and lacking morals. It shows that money and power rule politics and many moral issues are passed aside for greed and popularity.…
“Why Are Americans So Easy to Manipulate” is an article written by Bruce E. Levine about big corporations using behavior modification techniques to manipulate people into using their products. Levine is a clinical psychologist, an author, and a social critic from New York City. He graduated from Queens of the City University of New York and received his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Cincinnati. Levine is also on the editorial board for the journal Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry. (Bruce Levine Bio) Levine develops an argument to inform the middle and lower class Americans about the behavior modification techniques that big corporations use to manipulate them.…
After the Civil War the domination of the "political machine" over the affairs of government in the urban cities of the north became an undisputed fact of local politics. Their power flowed from creating a form of government that sought to perpetuate the position of its leaders by engaging in a bartering process with voters. The political machine existed during a time of mass migration to our urban centers from both immigrants and those in search of work. It played upon the ethnic composition of the new electorate, and their focus on obtaining basic necessities such as work, housing and food. Likewise, political machines acted as a facilitator toward businesses who chose to support them. If a business provided financial contributions and control…
I don't make nearly as much I need, and I'm becoming impatient. I don't want to struggle anymore, and I want America to turn itself around and realize its problems. And I'm not the only one. I see people become more agitated by each passing day, and strikes are happing each week. But as one starts, it's violently put to rest, and we seem to be going nowhere. If only they would realize low wages affect everyone and future generations, but oh wait, the people who are affected aren't important. The wealthy are. And it seems to me that our wages keep getting lower while the wealthy's rise steadily. We're struggling to find food, and they're buying a car. And to make matters worse, as each week passes, my worries go up. I've been reading stories of events taking place around the world which people are classifying under the title: the red scare. I'm fearful it might escalate to put me and my family at risk. It is only getting worse, and each article has more horrid details than the last. But I hope with the new president, he'll turn this country around and enforce change. I hope men and women make the right decision, and we voted for the right person for office because if we don't, America is just going to keep…
The 1950’s was a time marked by fear, paranoia, and persecution, where even Hollywood was under scrutiny. Those involved in Hollywood whether it be directing or acting found themselves being censored and limited due to the political events taking place around the world. Within the accounts of Mark Goodson and Arthur Miller, they cite the ways in which the anti-communist movement affected television programming and motion pictures during the 1950’s. To start, Mark Goodson recalls his experiences as a television producer during the Red Scare. He said his first experience when dealing with the movement was at the start of his television show, What’s My Line?, when a member on his panel was listed in the Red Channels.…
As I sit back and watch how the presidential campaign unfolds, I cannot help but realize what a terrible state our country is in. I am worried about the future of my family, my friends, and my life.…
The general population is good at looking the other way and always finding something else to worry about than the real issues we face here in America. We focus and are persuaded by our leaders to focus on matters and issues miles and miles away from our own homeland. The death of this very young man Treyvon Martin has stirred the…
Protests have swept over the nation after the recent presidential election. The first amendment states that people have the right to go against government leaders if they have any concerns, that was present in the form of protests which took over many cities across the nation. What these people have done is completely justified; however, some others have gone as far as harming supporters of the other party, causing huge traffic jams along with vandalism and it is even a safety hazard for the protesters.…
1.)After reading what John Perkins had to say I really had to second guess my understanding and acceptance of our government. I did not realize how far the government is willing to go to ensure the world order and economic structure is always stacked in our country’s favor. I thought we were the country to help other countries out. The government does this, but makes it so the countries we are assisting are forever in debt to us, giving us what we want. We all seem to want to believe that we have a great government system but does tricking vulnerable countries and making them “slaves” to our economy sound like a caring strategy? I would have to say no. It was interesting to read from John Perkins that they will go through different levels of people until someone does the job and manipulates the other country or people. If those people do not succeed, then young men and women soldiers are brought forward to win the fight like they are doing in Iraq. This is pathetic. The government will put many peoples’ lives on the line just so they can have their way. After this information was brought to my attention, it made me and is making me feel very insecure about the government I live my life by. I love my country but the government is a completely different situation for me now.…
Policies should be made to attain the goals in life of equity, efficiency, security, and liberty. "Policy…
The power of being president, and all the endless decisions that comes with it. Barack Obama has the final say of the legislative, executive, and judicial branch. These three branches make up America’s politics. Now the president can’t govern a whole country all by himself, he needs help. In irony the president may be called the most powerful man in the world but his politicians also control the outcome of his decisions. The president needs to take into consideration the powers of the other three branches. "A president cannot lead unless he appreciates the perspectives of other elected politicians and accepts their legitimacy." (Bowles) What has Obama been doing with his powers lately?…
The American dream used to feel like a light at the end of a dark tunnel, and there was always an opportunity to do better. Now the American dream has died, and America is not what it used to be because America has crippled itself by allowing Americans to live off of the government for so long. This is not to say that everyone on welfare is lazy because that cannot be proven. Though according to Mike Emanuel, a chief congressional correspondent for FOX News Channel, “Newly released Census data reveals nearly 110 million Americans – more than one-third of the country – are receiving government assistance of some kind” (Emanuel). The government assistance is constantly being abused, and instead of doing something about it, it seems…
"Greed is good; greed is right; greed works." Although the validity or correctness of the statement is questionable on multiple grounds, when Gordon Gekko uttered these infamous words he accurately explained the rationale behind many financial, or more specifically, Wall Street decisions. Greed ensures that the course of action is only determined by the resulting monetary wealth, not by other factors such as societal and legal effects.…
