Football vs Soccer
Football is a popular sport in the United States, while soccer is more popular around the World. Soccer and football have many similarities between each other. They both have leagues that are played outdoors like the National Football League and Major League Soccer. The teams consist of eleven players on the field at a time. In order to score in each of the sports, the team has to score on the opponent’s goal line. Football and soccer have indoor leagues where they play indoors all year long. Both sports have positions in the game that players need to play.
The sports are very different in many ways. The World Cup is the biggest soccer tournament unlike football which does not have a world wide tournament. Ronaldo, a Brazilian soccer star has been given the title, man of the tournament three times and even in 1998, when his team lost the title to France, he was given the title. The world has seen soccer players like Meradona and others, but Pele to date is considered unmatchable in this field. It was the 2002 World Cup, when a German goal keep, Oliver Kahn, won the title of the most valuable player of the World Cup. Soccer also has the national star, which has been given to the University of North Carolina because it has won sixteen national soccer tournaments in women’s soccer since 1982, when the first Soccer Cup for women was held. Walter Camp is the “Father of American Football,” and Willie Thrower, who played for the Bears in 1953, was the first African-American quarterback in the league. Football has a different point system than soccer. The point system is: touchdown- six points, extra point conversion- one point, two-point conversion-two points, field goal- three points, and safety- two points. In soccer each goal is only worth one point. William “Pudge” Heffelfinger was paid $500 to play football for the Allegheny Athletic Association against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club in 1892 making him the first professional football player. The first football game was played on November 6th of 1869 in Brunswick, New Jersey between the Rutgers and Princeton. The game was observed by one-hundred spectators and the players wore no helmets or uniforms. The players kept score by giving a team one point each time the goal line was crossed. The Rutgers won the game with a final score of 6 to 4. Walter Camp, the father of American football, later evolved the rules of the game as a coach and athletic director…

The other difference is the aim of the game. While football use touchdowns to score where the defense has to use every mean to stop the competing team from scoring. In this regard, a soccer team is considered as a whole. The defense depends on the team that has the ball at a time since some of the midfielders have to be involved in defense when the competing team is having the ball. In such a scenario, midfielders of the team that is controlling the ball will be acting as an offensive. Although they have some similarities there are also quite a few differences. First of all American football is played with an egg-shaped ball while soccer is played with a sphere shaped ball. Football players are usually large and strong due to the contact of the sport which requires them to wear padding to protect themselves, including shoulder pads, helmets, and padded pants. Soccer players are usually quite a bit smaller, a heck of a lot faster, and have to be very well conditioned. They only have shin guards as padding. Another major difference is scoring. In American football six points are awarded for a touchdown and one point for an extra point which occurs when a ball is kicked through the uprights after a touchdown. Three points are awarded for a field goal which is kicking the ball through the uprights. Also two points for a safety which occurs when an opposing player is tackled in his own end zone. Soccer scoring is only 1 point and it’s simply called a goal. The game…

soccer has been an underlying problem for years and no one has addressed or attempted to fix it. A study showed that the lowest participation rate in sports from the lower class is in soccer,(Schaerlaeckens) . The youth in America participate more in basketball or football because it is more accessible to them and they feel a connection to the sport. They feel that they can achieve big things by persevering and becoming great at these sports, but that feeling and passion is not present for soccer. This is because soccer is a rich kids sport and is hard to access for low-income families. “It continues to be seen as a white, suburban sport” says Briana Scurry, an African American player who helped the U.S. Women's team win the World Cup in 1999. This quote sums up everything that is wrong with the current state of the sport. The average cost of a travel soccer team for a kid is $3,000 a year, which is an impossible sum for many families, (SoccerAmerica). The pay-to-play system is plaguing the possibility of future stars by denying the lower class families a platform to perform on. It also kills the diversity within the national team. A third of the national team is made up of non-white players, but most of them are only half-american and learned their soccer abroad. Major League Soccer, the top division of soccer in America, is also guilty of being driven by money. One of the youth academy executives stated that his team would only take in players that they felt they could monetize and eventually sell on for a profit, (Carpenter…
