On November 6, 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played what was billed as the first college football game. In 1876, a coach named Walter Camp, who is considered the “Father of American Football,” helped produce the first rules of American football. Now over 147 years later football is still a popular sport watched by millions of americans. American football is a sport played by two teams of eleven players who attempt to get a touchdown. Whoever scores a touchdown will gain six points for their team.The players use a football which is a oval shaped ball made from leather. It takes about 600 cows to make one full season's worth of NFL football’s. The 2 main football positions are offense and defense. The offense is the side which is in
possession of the ball. It is their job to advance the ball towards the opponent's end zone to score points. Also there is the defense. They prevent the other team from scoring. Football players go through intense,vigorous workouts to remain in shape for games. For example they lift heavy weights,do chain push ups,and a lot of running. In addition to exercising football players also have to eat healthy too. Footballer players have to eat a lot of carbohydrates such as bread,pasta,or starches. Carbs are important because they release energy. Although football can be a fun sport to play there are many risks as well. With the average NFL salary at $2,150,000 many players choose to take the risk. One of the biggest risks to football is getting a concusion. A concussion is temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. Symptoms of a concussion are a headache,sensitivity to light,or nausea. In the U.S. athletes suffer 300,000 concussions a year. In addition football players are prone to more ligament sprains in their ankles. Basic equipment worn by most football players include helmet,shoulder pads, gloves, shoes, and thigh and knee pads. They are worn to protect players from these life threatening injuries. The National Football League hosts a championship game annually called the Super Bowl. Watched by one hundred million people the Superbowl is one of the most watched television events in history. All in all football is one of America’s favorite sport and loved by millions.
