Rugby union is based on the 'right to contest possession'. A team is not required to surrender possession when the ball carrier is tackled, in contrast to American football, where a team must surrender their possession when a player is tackled and no downs remain. Rugby union players must win possession in open play, unless the team in possession makes an infringement, scores, or the ball leaves the field of play.…

The most popular sport in the south, football, is a game that stumbled out of rugby and soccer. In 1823, English soccer player, William Ebb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it, inspiring the students of Princeton to become involved in a sport they called “ball town”. The first football game was played on November 6th of 1869 in Brunswick, New Jersey between the Rutgers and Princeton. The game was observed by one-hundred spectators and the players wore no helmets or uniforms. The players kept score by giving a team one point each time the goal line was crossed. The Rutgers won the game with a final score of 6 to 4. Walter Camp, the father of American football, later evolved the rules of the game as a coach and athletic director…

Knowing that this could not continue the direction it was heading, football players grudgingly accepted the wearing of protective equipment. Step-by-step, players braved being called sissies to wear pads of various types that in just a few years would be considered essential. The first of this protective gear was the hip, thigh, knee and shoulder pads, which were just thin layers of pliable foam. The final installment, and without a doubt the most important, was the helmet. George Barclay is the man credited for the invention of the first football helmet. He designed a headgear which had three thick leather straps forming a close fit around his head, made by a harness maker. It became known as a head harness. It slowly began to take more of the appearance we recognize today when around 1915 more padding and flaps were added, along with ear holes for better on-field…

Football over the Years Everything changes over time, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, and others you can’t really tell it has changed at all but in football you can easily tell the changes it has been through over the years. While all sports have changed over the years football seems to have changed the most dramatically from rules, equipment, stadium and even in the way we watch football today. When American football was born it was an all-white sport played with hardly no equipment for protection except for a leather helmet to protect your head, the game was played on hard dirt and as you can expect, injuries were constant and some deaths even occurred from the brutal hits and the missing component of protection equipment.…

A football helmet has long been time iconic symbol and cultural artifact. American football can be traced back to the mid-19th century. The very first intercollegiate game was played in 1869 and the first professional game was played in 1892; however, they did not use helmets. In fact the leather helmet was not invented until the early 1900s, and its use was not enforced until the 1920s. Since that time helmets have evolved and become more protective. In 1939, Riddell, a company in Illinois, manufactured plastic helmets because they thought it would be safer for the players. Football helmets became mandatory by the 1940s in the NFL and plastic facemasks were being put on them as well. The helmets we see players wearing did not come onto the market until the 1990s. Todays helmets are made of polycarbonate and are much stronger than any previously made helmet. Riddell has recently developed a helmet called the Revolution, which is supposed to be more concussion proof, but in theory there is no such thing.…

Football was putting America in a crisis when the sport first became popular (Majerol 18). Majerol reported that “In 1905, at least 18 high school and college boys died playing the sport, and more than 150 were seriously hurt” (18). Many injuries came because no protective gear was worn and the rules of the game were not strongly enforced (Majerol 18). People had played and gotten injured would suffer from concussions, broken limbs, spines (Majerol 18). The game of football was close to being banned, but former president, Theodore Roosevelt, was a fan of the game and kept football from being outlawed (Majerol 18). By time the 1870s rolled around football had been labeled as a blood sport (Majerol 18). Ordinary roughness in the sport usually…

Football did not start as a national game. It was only a sport for only college students to play. Until 1906 when more people began to play and football began to get more rules. Shortly later the NFL started changing the rules even more than they did the first time there was now restricted defense contact with wide receivers if they are over the five-yard line and offence linemen had to start extending their arms to block pass rushers. After, that the NFL committee started getting together with each other each year to improve the player’s safety rules to keep a safe game for all players. Players today run a lot faster than they did twenty years ago. The sprints have doubled since 2002 and they have increased by forty percent from 2012. The equipment that is used is much different today and it is much more improved.…

We are forced to accept that violence is no longer an acceptable reaction by anybody, that we must conjure the self-control to channel our anger into other more efficient ways. This has changed many views of interpretation on the world in which we live. You can especially see this change in the sports aspect of life. Sports are one of the biggest categories people are involved with, and something many people of the world share a passion for. As you can probably tell, this creates a growing problem. Most sports were created to be violent, an excuse to exert physical domination on another human. Sports were a way in which athletes could escape the normal world, have a new set of rules to follow, be held to a different standard.…

American football as we know it originated from rugby played in Britain in the mid-19th century. The person who Americans consider the “Father of American Football” is Walter Camp. Professional football can be traced back to 1982, when there was a $500 contract for the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club to play a game against each other. Originally football was primarily a sport of the Midwestern industrial towns in the United State. In 1902, the American Professional Football Association was formed and two years later the National Football League. The competition was fierce between the two leagues, which led the two leagues to merge. Football eventually became national. When the two leagues merged is when…

It was a Friday night in mid August 1991. I was a noseguard and middle linebacker on defense, depending on the play. I also played right guard on the offensive line. This is the story of a night that could of well ended any hope of being an athlete, on any level, from this point on. I will be telling the story from the defensive side of the ball, due to that is where I was playing when I had five vertebrae, slightly, separated.…
