We are forced to accept that violence is no longer an acceptable reaction by anybody, that we must conjure the self-control to channel our anger into other more efficient ways. This has changed many views of interpretation on the world in which we live. You can especially see this change in the sports aspect of life. Sports are one of the biggest categories people are involved with, and something many people of the world share a passion for. As you can probably tell, this creates a growing problem. Most sports were created to be violent, an excuse to exert physical domination on another human. Sports were a way in which athletes could escape the normal world, have a new set of rules to follow, be held to a different standard. …show more content…
Now that we have technology that can test just about any type of hypothesis, the world is asking more question, becoming more superstitious, and these questions create panama from the fear that anything can be possible. This aloud scientist to find evidence to support a direct relation to health and sports, and they found that the more physical the sport the more likely you are to suffer from a physical injury especially an injury to the brain. The media has also given the world the impression that physical sports makes men physical in their relationships. This has caused people to fear sports and the fear has driven lots of people away.
Football for example is a shrinking market, everyday more and more people are fearing the physical aspect of the sport and moving to a sport of lesser contact like lacrosse, or basketball. This tragic outcome is destroying the meaning of the game, its changing everything we know about how the games is supposed to be played and what a good play is. Things that used to get worshiped are now discriminated against. A player that plays with anger and aggression is now called a dirty player. The fear of physicality is demolishing the game. Football is a violent sport and should be played with the maximum amount of punishment you can provide. People are fearing the game because they only see the negative results on tv and online, nobody talks about the great legal hits that take place each week during the season, instead we seem to only report the couple illegal hits that happened. Football is portrayed by the media as an evil sport that does more damage than good, but they fail to tell the whole story. The media doesn’t show all the great things players do for their communities and other people, instead they focus on one person that made a mistake. There are 1,696 players in the National Football League and 82% of these athletes have done something to help make a difference in this world by donation. In 2014 there were only 13 athletes that got in legal trouble which is less than 1% but yet the media seems to be more concerned with those 13 people instead of the 1000 that have done great helpful things. The media is wrong about what they report and it is driving many young kids away from the game.
For example the NFL gives out an award every year called the Walter |Payton man of the year award, and this is one of the most competitive awards the players can receive. “The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field. Each team nominates one player who has had a significant positive impact on his community. An elite panel of judges will select the overall winner. The three finalists will be announced and the winner will be announced during the Super Bowl. Each of the 32 team nominees receives a $5,000 donation to their charity of choice. The two runner-ups will receive an additional $6,000 donation to their charity of choice. The winner will receive an additional $50,000 donation to his charity of choice. All donations are courtesy of NFL Foundation and Nationwide.” (http://www.nfl.com) Patrick Peterson is an NFL player that does a lot for his community including “providing more than 40,000 low-income/inner city youth with encouragement, opportunities and resources to reach their full potential. One of the most notable events the foundation hosts is Celebs and Steaks, which features Patrick and Cardinals teammates serving a four-course meal to guests to raise money for underprivileged youth. The foundation also hosts a Celebrity Golf Challenge every year. (www.nflfoundation.com)” Another example is NFL’s wide receiver Anquan Boldin. According to nflfoundation, “this fall, the Anquan Boldin Foundation distributed five $10,000 scholarships to high-school graduates. Anquan's Annual Q-Festival raises over $100,000 providing free entertainment to residents and participating fans. He provided over $10,000 in funding to minimize the devastation caused by the drought and hunger crisis in Ethiopia. He volunteered in Ethiopian communities and participated in public service announcements to raise awareness. There are countless examples on professional athletes using their income to do good in their communities and in our world.
NFL players are portrayed as people who don’t live full lives, with concussions becoming a fairly new discovery people are worried about their overall health and believe participation in these physical sports, mostly football, they will not be able to live healthy lives. This is a false accusation, because these athletes have a very healthy life style and tend to live very healthy lives. These players have made diet and exercise an extremely important aspect of their lives and the fact that they will still be doing those things after retirement will grant them a much more stable lifestyle, lowering their risk of health issues. Many retired athletes will move on to a coaching or training job, thus passing there incredible knowledge on to other generations, and allowing us to learn from their mistakes. This amazing factor is one thing that the world will always be able to use more of. There is nothing like trainers who teach from experience and have lots of passed down knowledge.
Our athletics teaches us so much about ourselves and the world around us, and it just doesn’t make sense that the media seems to be targeting our great sports like football, the leadership athletes learn participation in football cannot be taught by words alone, it’s the experience of being in ‘battle’ with your brothers and knowing that the man next to you has your back.
Leadership comes from the ability to make the wrong call, and athletes know this. We have all had to make a decision with no right choice, and sometimes we carry out the task and don’t get the result we have been trying to find, this causes us to be stronger and except we did all we can do. The athletes that can be leaders will be able to be more efficient in so many different aspects of life. Athletics create a sense of discipline that our generation is much in need of, and the more disciplined we become the better the world will turn out to be. Living in a world where our attention spans are shrinking and we are not able to adapt very well, the commitment we achieve through athletics can save us. Commitment is a combination of determination through discipline and knowing somebody relies on you. Athletics will teach the younger generation to withstand more difficult tasks. Athletes can be stronger people able to accomplish more without being broken down so easily, and that is why we need to start preswaying kids to join athletics, not be afraid of them, because in reality there’s nothing to be afraid of, the risk is greater outside of
athletics.
