Concussions In Ice Hockey
The two sports are both at high risk of injury. They are both high contact sports they call for heavy padding and a lot of protection. The game of ice hockey is especially strenuous on someone's head. The most recent and accurate study on concussions in the NHL was done in seven seasons over 1997-2004. This study showed that 559 players had gotten a concussion during regular season games over seven seasons(Concussions Statistics Tallied in Study of NHL). In football there are more full body injuries than there are head injuries. Yes football players can get concussions and do but not as often as injuring the rest of their body. The father of american football was a coach and player at Yale University named Walter Camp however there was a student at Princeton who was playing a similar game but not exactly football. There was also a game played at harvard every monday that was also very similar to football but that game was known to get very violent and so the school started to call them “bloody mondays”. A lot happened for football in the year 1865. In that year the popularity of the game grew and the first college game was played. A few years later after realizing how violent and dangerous the sport was colleges started to ban it soon after the few colleges that started football including Yale Harvard and Princeton had meetings with the colleges who banned the sport and agreed on specific rules to keep the game safe for students to play. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was created after that (Carter). Football eventually evolved into the most watched sport on TV.Unlike football it is unknown the origin of hockey. However it is believed that most of the concept and rules of ice hockey came from the sport field hockey. However the rules of modern hockey were created by James Creighton. The first game of ice hockey following Creighton's rules was played in 1875. The first hockey club ever to be made was the McGill ice hockey club founded in 1877.
